Forget the Price Chart for a Second — Here's What NEAR's Tokenomics Are Actually Doing

NEAR is trading around $3.684 today, up 5.41%, after pulling back somewhat from a 24-hour high near $3.914. Last week's move briefly pushed the token from around $3.25 into a 21% single-day surge.

But honestly, the price action is the less interesting part of this story right now.

What's actually worth understanding is how NEAR's token economics have been changing over the past year, because that structural shift could matter far more than any single day's percentage move.

THE OLD NEAR STORY — AND WHY IT STOPPED WORKING

For years, NEAR's pitch was simple: a fast, sharded, low-fee Layer 1 competing with Ethereum and Solana for developers, users and ecosystem activity.

The problem with that model, which affected many Layer 1 networks, was the disconnect between ecosystem activity and actual token value.

Apps could be busy.

Users could be active.

Transaction numbers could grow.

But none of that necessarily created direct demand for the underlying NEAR token.

That is the part of the model that has been changing.

WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGED THE EQUATION

NEAR has reduced its maximum annual inflation from 5% to 2.5%, while the token supply is now fully unlocked.

That alone represents a meaningful change in the supply structure.

But the more interesting part is the evolution of NEAR's revenue model.

NEAR Intents is designed as a cross-chain execution system where users or AI agents specify the outcome they want, such as a swap, payment or settlement, while solvers compete to execute that request across multiple chains.

The current NEAR Intents ecosystem reports more than $29 billion in cumulative volume across 34 chains.

The important part for NEAR holders is what happens to the revenue generated by this activity.

Protocol revenue is being directed toward NEAR buybacks, creating a direct connection between network usage and demand for the token.

That changes the old equation.

Instead of ecosystem activity existing separately from the token, successful growth in Intents can now create a mechanism through which protocol revenue feeds back into NEAR.

THE BURN MECHANISM IS ALSO GETTING STRICTER

There is another important change happening on the supply side.

NEAR governance approved HSP-027, which removes the 30% developer gas rebate.

The proposal changes the distribution of eligible execution gas fees so that the portion previously returned through the developer rebate can instead contribute to protocol-level burning.

The implementation has already been prepared in nearcore, while the latest governance update indicates that mainnet deployment is still part of the rollout process.

So this should not be described as if the entire change is already fully active everywhere.

The bigger idea is still very important.

Put the two mechanisms together and NEAR is moving toward an economic model where usage can affect token supply and demand through two different channels:

Revenue from NEAR Intents can fund NEAR buybacks.
Eligible execution gas fees can contribute to permanent token burns.

That is a very different structure from the traditional Layer 1 model where network activity and token value often remain disconnected.

WHERE AI AGENTS ACTUALLY FIT INTO THIS

This is where the thesis becomes more specific than simply calling NEAR an "AI narrative."

Autonomous AI agents will eventually need to handle things like trading, payments and treasury management.

For that to work efficiently, agents need infrastructure that can execute transactions across multiple chains without requiring users or agents to manually manage bridges, different gas assets and fragmented liquidity.

That is exactly the type of problem NEAR Intents is designed to address.

NEAR is also developing privacy-focused infrastructure around AI agents, including confidential computing and systems designed to protect sensitive information during execution.

Confidential Intents extends the same broader cross-chain execution idea toward privacy-preserving transactions.

This is why NEAR's AI and Intents narrative is more specific than simply attaching the token to the AI trend.

The infrastructure is attempting to solve actual execution and privacy problems that autonomous agents could face as they begin interacting with real financial systems.

THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE THESIS — AND THE HONEST CAVEAT

One of the interesting thresholds discussed around the NEAR ecosystem is the idea that sufficiently high Intents volume could eventually generate enough revenue to offset the network's token issuance.

A figure around $175 million in daily Intents volume has been discussed as a potential threshold under certain fee assumptions.

If that level of activity were reached while current economics remained broadly similar, buyback pressure could potentially become larger than new token issuance.

That would move NEAR toward a net-deflationary model driven by usage rather than simply relying on additional inflation reductions.

But there is an important caveat.

That is a projection, not a guaranteed outcome.

Fee rates can change.

Competition can increase.

User behavior can change.

And other cross-chain interoperability solutions are competing for the same market.

So the important question is not simply whether NEAR can reach a particular volume number.

It is whether sustainable usage can grow quickly enough while the economics remain attractive.

POSSIBLE BULLISH SCENARIO

If NEAR Intents volume continues scaling and AI-agent adoption for cross-chain execution accelerates, the combination of buybacks and burns could become increasingly important for NEAR's token economics.

In that scenario, network growth would have a clearer path toward creating direct economic value for the token.

That would be a meaningful difference from the older Layer 1 model.

POSSIBLE BEARISH SCENARIO

The thesis still depends heavily on continued growth in Intents activity and protocol revenue.

Competition from other interoperability solutions could put pressure on fees and margins.

There is also the normal risk that ambitious crypto adoption projections take longer to materialize than expected.

If usage grows slowly, the impact of buybacks and burns may remain relatively small compared with the overall token supply and market capitalization.

So the mechanism can work without necessarily becoming large enough to change the valuation immediately.

WHAT TO ACTUALLY WATCH GOING FORWARD

For me, this is where the NEAR story becomes much more interesting.

Instead of watching only the NEAR price chart, I would watch the underlying economic data.

Intents daily volume.

Protocol revenue.

NEAR buybacks.

Actual token burns.

Revenue compared with token emissions.

AI-agent activity.

And the growth of NEAR Intents across different chains.

Those numbers can tell us whether the tokenomics thesis is actually developing or simply becoming another narrative around an altcoin.

MY TAKE

What separates this from a purely narrative-driven crypto story is that the mechanism is increasingly measurable.

NEAR is building a connection between actual protocol activity and token economics through revenue, buybacks and burns.

The open question is not whether the mechanism exists.

The bigger question is whether usage can scale enough for that mechanism to become economically significant relative to NEAR's valuation.

That is the part I will be watching.

The price chart can move 5%, 10% or 20% in a day.

But tokenomics change much more slowly.

And sometimes that slower structural change is the more important story.

Do you see NEAR's tokenomics overhaul as a genuine structural catalyst, or does NEAR still need much more real usage growth before the buyback-and-burn model can materially change the valuation?
