Gate Leads Stock Perpetuals on Two Fronts at Once, Here's Why That's Rare
Most of the time in this industry, breadth and depth pull in opposite directions. A platform that lists everything under the sun tends to spread liquidity thin across hundreds of low-volume markets, while a platform focused on deep liquidity usually keeps its offering narrow. According to a recent DefiLlama report, Gate is apparently pulling off both at once in the stock perpetuals category, and that combination is worth breaking down properly rather than just taking at face value.
What the numbers actually show
The report reportedly places Gate first in stock-related perpetual contract coverage with 385 listed contracts, more than any other platform tracked. On the volume and open interest side, Gate ranks third industry-wide, with average daily volume around 1.15 billion dollars and average open interest near 738 million dollars. And on liquidity depth specifically, Gate's top five highest-volume stock perpetual contracts, SNDK, SKHYNIX, SPCX, SOXL, and MU, reportedly rank first across the board for depth.
Why ranking first in two very different categories matters
Coverage breadth and liquidity depth measure fundamentally different things. Coverage tells you how many distinct markets are available to trade, it's a proxy for optionality. Depth tells you how much size you can actually move in a specific market without meaningfully moving the price against yourself, it's a proxy for execution quality. A platform can easily win on one without the other. Listing 385 contracts is only genuinely useful if a meaningful chunk of them have real, tradeable liquidity behind them rather than just existing as thin, illiquid listings nobody actually uses.
The fact that Gate's top five contracts by volume also rank first in liquidity depth suggests the platform isn't just padding its numbers with obscure, rarely-traded pairs to inflate a coverage statistic. The most actively traded names on the platform are also the deepest, which is the combination that actually matters for someone placing real size.
A quick look at what's trading right now
Live data backs up some of this activity. SKHYNIX5L, the 5x leveraged long product, is up over 20.9 percent in the past 24 hours, trading around 1.79, with meaningful daily volume behind that move. SOXL3L, the 3x leveraged semiconductor ETF product, is up nearly 20 percent as well, with turnover well above 500,000 dollars on the day. SpaceX, tracked as SPCX, is trading essentially flat around 155. This kind of activity, especially in leveraged semiconductor and chip-adjacent products, lines up with the broader AI and chip sector momentum that's been playing out this week.
What this ranking actually signals about the broader stock perpetuals category
Stock perpetuals as a product category have been growing steadily as more traders look for leveraged, always-on exposure to individual equities and ETFs without needing to go through traditional brokerage hours or margin structures. The fact that ranking first in coverage and matching that with top-tier depth on the most popular names is possible at all suggests this category still has real room to mature, platforms that can build both breadth and quality liquidity simultaneously are positioning themselves well as this segment likely continues expanding.
What to watch going forward
Whether Gate can maintain this dual leadership as the stock perpetuals category grows is the more interesting long-term question. Adding new listings is relatively straightforward, maintaining deep liquidity as volume scales across an expanding number of contracts is considerably harder. Watching whether newer additions to that 385-contract lineup start showing similar depth characteristics to the current top five, or whether depth concentrates narrowly around a small handful of flagship names, would tell you a lot about how sustainable this leadership position actually is.
My take on this
Breadth without depth is a vanity metric, and depth without breadth just means you're only good at one thing. Ranking first in both simultaneously, especially with the data showing the most popular contracts are also the deepest ones, is a genuinely stronger signal than either statistic on its own. It suggests real trading activity and liquidity provisioning is happening across the platform's core offerings, not just a headline coverage number designed to look impressive without much substance behind it.
What do you think matters more when choosing where to trade stock perpetuals, having access to the widest range of names, or knowing your specific trades will execute with minimal slippage on the names you actually care about?
