Arc has only been live for one day, yet its ecosystem has already delivered a powerful lesson: massive activity does not automatically mean sustainable value.

Circle’s Arc public mainnet launched on September 16 as an Ethereum-compatible Layer 1 designed for financial markets, real-time money movement and agentic economic activity. The network launched with more than 100 applications and more than 100 institutional and ecosystem builders, giving it a much broader ambition than a typical speculative chain.

But the market’s first reaction has been very different from the long-term institutional narrative.

According to on-chain data reported on September 17, Arc recorded approximately $410.8 million in first-day DEX volume and 7.76 million transactions. The striking detail is that roughly 82% of the DEX volume came from memecoin launchpads. One launchpad, Arguspad, alone generated about $202.35 million in volume.

That creates an important question:

Is Arc already showing strong adoption — or is the network simply experiencing an extraordinary burst of launch-day speculation?

The volatility tells another story

Several Arc ecosystem tokens experienced severe reversals on September 17.

Gate market data showed ARGUS down more than 40% over 12 hours and LONG down more than 70%, while other ecosystem tokens also suffered sharp declines.

The timing is particularly interesting because Bitcoin and Ethereum were showing relative resilience after the latest Federal Reserve decision. In other words, the weakness in these smaller Arc ecosystem tokens cannot automatically be explained by a broad crypto-market selloff.

This is a classic feature of early-stage crypto markets: when liquidity is limited and attention is concentrated, prices can move dramatically in both directions.

A token can rise rapidly when traders compete to enter early.

The same token can collapse just as quickly when early holders take profits, liquidity disappears or traders move to the next opportunity.

Volume is impressive — but volume needs context

The $410.8 million first-day DEX figure is significant.

But volume alone does not tell us whether Arc has achieved sustainable economic adoption.

If most activity is generated by short-term token speculation, the number can fall sharply once the initial excitement disappears.

This is why investors should distinguish between:

Transactions and retained users.

Trading volume and productive economic activity.

New token creation and useful applications.

Launch-day attention and long-term adoption.

Arc was specifically designed around financial infrastructure. Its architecture includes USDC-denominated gas, sub-second transaction finality and interoperability with more than 20 blockchains through Circle’s infrastructure.

Those capabilities could become important if developers and institutions actually use them at scale.

But that thesis will require time to validate.

The institutional story is still important

It would also be a mistake to judge Arc entirely through the performance of speculative ecosystem tokens.

Circle launched Arc with a significant institutional and developer ecosystem. Its stated use cases include stablecoin payments, foreign exchange, tokenized assets, financial markets and machine-driven economic activity.

That creates a very different long-term proposition from the memecoin activity dominating the first day.

The real test is whether the infrastructure attracts persistent financial activity after the launch excitement fades.

If stablecoin settlement, payments, tokenized assets and institutional applications continue growing, today's speculative activity may eventually look like only the opening chapter.

If activity remains dominated by short-lived token trading, the impressive launch numbers may prove much less meaningful.

What should investors watch now?

1. Liquidity

Large percentage moves in small tokens are a warning that liquidity can be thin. Investors should examine actual market depth rather than judging an asset solely by its market capitalization.

2. User retention

A large number of new addresses is encouraging, but the more important question is how many users return after the initial launch period.

3. Stablecoin activity

Because Arc is built around stablecoin-native financial infrastructure, sustained USDC usage could be a more meaningful adoption signal than speculative token volume.

4. Developer activity

The number and quality of applications continuing to launch will help determine whether Arc becomes a functioning ecosystem rather than simply a trading venue.

5. Token fundamentals

Every ecosystem token should be evaluated independently. A launchpad token, DeFi token and payment-related project can have completely different supply structures, utility and liquidity profiles.

Is the dip an opportunity?

This is where investors need to be especially careful.

A sharp decline does not automatically mean an asset has become undervalued.

A token that falls 50% can fall another 50% if liquidity remains weak or the initial demand disappears.

At the same time, volatility does not automatically mean that the underlying ecosystem has failed.

The key distinction is between price and fundamentals.

Instead of asking only, “How much has this token fallen?” investors should ask:

What creates sustainable demand for this token?

Does it have real utility?

Is there measurable user activity?

How is its supply distributed?

How deep is its liquidity?

And does the project have a reason to exist even after the launch-day hype disappears?

The bigger Arc opportunity

Arc's first 24 hours produced a fascinating contradiction.

The network generated extraordinary trading activity, yet much of that activity was driven by speculative token launchpads. At the same time, the underlying infrastructure is being positioned toward stablecoin payments, institutional finance and programmable economic activity.

That means the market has not reached a final conclusion about Arc.

The next few weeks may be far more informative than the first 24 hours.

Can Arc convert launch-day speculation into lasting users, developers, liquidity and real financial activity?

That is the question that matters.

For now, the smartest way to look at the ecosystem may be neither blind optimism nor panic selling — but separating the technology, network adoption and individual token fundamentals from the short-term speculation surrounding them.

Arc has captured attention. Now it has to prove that attention can become sustainable adoption.

What are you watching most closely: Arc’s on-chain activity, institutional adoption, or the recovery of its ecosystem tokens?
