#OpenAISeeks1.2TrillionValuationBeforeIPO OpenAI Eyes $1.2 Trillion Valuation Ahead of Potential IPO
OpenAI is once again drawing major attention from global investors after reports that the company has held early discussions about a new private funding round that could value it at approximately $1.2 trillion ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO). The discussions are reportedly still at an early stage, meaning the valuation and structure could change before any deal is finalized.
The potential valuation would represent a substantial increase from OpenAI’s $852 billion valuation following its March 2026 funding round, when the company raised around $122 billion. The reported discussions indicate continued investor interest in the rapidly expanding artificial-intelligence sector and in OpenAI’s position within it.
One of the key factors behind the renewed attention is OpenAI’s recent business momentum. According to the Financial Times, the company’s annualized revenue passed $40 billion in August 2026, with revenue growth accelerating following the launch of its latest AI products. At the same time, OpenAI continues to face extremely high costs associated with developing and training increasingly powerful AI models and expanding the infrastructure required to support them.
The IPO timeline remains an important part of the story. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said recently that the company does not plan to go public in 2026, making a 2027-or-later listing more relevant to current discussions. Reuters reported that OpenAI had previously considered a trillion-dollar IPO, but the company has now ruled out a public listing this year.
A new private funding round before an IPO could provide additional capital for AI infrastructure and allow existing investors to increase their exposure. However, because the reported discussions are preliminary, the proposed $1.2 trillion figure should be viewed as a potential valuation rather than a completed transaction or confirmed IPO valuation.
The development also highlights the enormous financial scale surrounding the AI industry. OpenAI is not only competing on model capabilities and product adoption; it is operating in an environment where computing infrastructure, data-center investment, research, talent, and model training require extraordinary amounts of capital.
For the broader technology and financial markets, OpenAI’s potential valuation will be closely watched because it could become one of the most significant private-market benchmarks for the AI sector. As the company considers its next funding and eventual public-market strategy, investors will likely continue monitoring revenue growth, infrastructure spending, product adoption, profitability prospects, and the risks associated with rapidly advancing AI technology.
OpenAI’s reported $1.2 trillion valuation discussion is not simply an IPO headline—it reflects the rapidly changing economics of artificial intelligence and the enormous capital requirements behind the next generation of AI.
