SK HYNIX, TEMASEK AND JAPAN: THE AI MEMORY STORY IS GETTING BIGGER
Some semiconductor stories are about one company.
This one is becoming about an entire supply chain.
Temasek's reported interest in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, combined with SK Hynix's consideration of a major memory-chip facility in Japan's Miyagi prefecture, creates an interesting picture of where capital, manufacturing capacity and AI demand are moving at the same time.
The Miyagi proposal is still under review, so it should not be treated as a completed investment. Reuters reported on August 21 that SK Hynix was considering an investment potentially worth tens of trillions of won, while the company said no final decision had been made.
But the strategic logic is easy to understand.
AI infrastructure needs enormous quantities of advanced memory, especially high-bandwidth memory, and companies are increasingly thinking about not only how much they can produce, but also where that production happens.
Japan offers an established semiconductor ecosystem, advanced industrial suppliers and government support for strategic chip investment.
That makes Miyagi more than a geographical expansion story.
It is potentially a supply-chain diversification story.
And the timing matters.
SK Hynix has already demonstrated extraordinary operating momentum. In Q2 2026, revenue reached 79.32 trillion won while operating profit hit 60.54 trillion won, producing a remarkable 76% operating margin. Revenue increased 257% year over year and operating profit jumped 557%.
Those numbers show what happens when AI infrastructure demand meets constrained high-value memory supply.
HBM is at the center of this equation.
The more powerful AI accelerators become, the more important high-performance memory becomes. SK Hynix has positioned itself directly inside that bottleneck, while its HBM4 products have already achieved customer-required operating speeds and the company has secured long-term agreements with key customers.
Then there is shareholder capital allocation.
On August 19, SK Hynix announced a 40 trillion won share repurchase and cancellation involving approximately 24.07 million shares, around 3.3% of shares outstanding. The program runs through November 19, and the company raised its shareholder-return target to more than 50% of cumulative 2025–2027 free cash flow.
That creates another important layer to the story.
The company is simultaneously trying to expand capacity for AI demand while returning substantial capital to shareholders.
That combination is unusual.
Now look at the stock itself.
SK Hynix closed September 15 at 1.69 million won, down 0.41% on the day, after trading between 1.671 million and 1.729 million won. Its 52-week range currently stretches from roughly 331,500 won to 2.987 million won.
The recent pullback therefore deserves attention, but volume and price action matter more than a single red candle.
The September 14 decline of 6.35% was sharp, yet the following session was relatively stable. That tells me the market is still digesting the broader AI and technology rotation rather than simply abandoning the memory thesis.
There are also upcoming catalysts.
September 18 is an important date to watch for any update surrounding the Japan discussion. September 30 brings Micron's results, followed by Samsung's preliminary figures and SK Hynix's third-quarter results later in October.
Those events can provide fresh evidence on memory pricing, AI demand, supply conditions and capital expenditure.
Of course, risks remain.
Semiconductor cycles can turn quickly. New capacity eventually arrives. A stronger Korean won can affect earnings translation. AI infrastructure spending could slow, and aggressive expansion can create future oversupply if industry investment gets too far ahead of demand.
That is why I would separate the long-term industrial story from short-term price movements.
For me, the bigger picture is straightforward:
Temasek represents capital.
Miyagi represents potential new capacity.
HBM represents the AI bottleneck.
The buyback represents shareholder returns.
And SK Hynix's financial results show that the company is already converting AI demand into extraordinary cash generation.
The September market pullback may create volatility, but the fundamental question remains the same:
Can AI demand continue growing faster than advanced-memory supply?
If the answer remains yes, SK Hynix stays at the center of one of the most important supply chains behind the global AI buildout.
That is the part of this story I will be watching most closely.
