Bessent: The dollar’s strength is based on credibility and policy certainty

Abstract generation in progress
Mars Finance reports that on September 15, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday that the U.S. dollar remains strong as a reserve currency, and that the increase in global trading volume reflects “the credibility of our system and the actions taken by this administration.” At a congressional hearing, Bessent said: “A strong dollar is not simply a price on a screen; it is the result of a series of actions. As we have seen during this administration’s tenure, we are establishing regulatory certainty, tax certainty, trade certainty, and energy certainty, which is bringing trillions of dollars of capital to the United States.” He said that although countries such as Russia have reduced their foreign exchange reserves, other countries continue to actively increase their holdings. Bessent is repeating the same old rhetoric. A strong dollar depends not on talk, but on actual purchasing power.

Energy and tax certainty are indeed crucial, but let’s sort out the debt ceiling before talking about credibility; otherwise, it’s all castles in the air.
