Behind 37 Licenses, What Really Matters Is a Long-Term Mindset

After Gate US obtained a Massachusetts MTL license, the number of U.S. state-level compliance licenses increased to 37. The figure may look like “just one more license,” but viewed in the context of competition among global trading platforms, this is actually a long-term project that demands considerable patience.

In the past, people tended to evaluate trading platforms by trading volume, user numbers, the number of supported assets, and even fee discounts. But as the industry gradually matures, the factors that truly determine how far a platform can go may be precisely those that are less glamorous—compliance, risk control, infrastructure, and localized operations.

This is especially true in a market like the United States, where every state has its own regulatory framework and licensing requirements. A platform willing to continuously invest resources in establishing state-level compliance is essentially building an entry barrier. Competitors cannot replicate it simply by changing a webpage or listing a few coins; they need time, capital, teams, and long-term communication with regulators.

Of course, having more licenses does not mean the product is necessarily the best. Ultimately, it still comes down to the user experience. Compliance is the foundation, the product is the house, liquidity is the utilities, and localization determines how comfortable users feel living there.#GateUS全美合规牌照增至37张

So if you ask what the biggest moat for global trading platforms is, I would lean toward the combination of “compliance + product + liquidity + localization.” Individual champions can emerge easily, but only those that can deliver consistently across all four areas over the long term may become players capable of weathering market cycles.#
