The second half of the exchange race may not be about who moves fastest, but who can stand firm
When Gate US reached 37 state-level compliance licenses in the United States, the market may see only a number, but for a trading platform, this actually represents a very long process of building capabilities.#GateUS全美合规牌照增至37张
Why might compliance become one of the most important moats for trading platforms in the future? Because the barriers to entry are changing. During the industry's rapid-growth phase, platforms could rely on product innovation, traffic, and marketing to capture market share quickly; but as the industry enters a more mature stage, regulation, risk control, and localized operations will become increasingly important.
The US market is especially complex, as regulatory requirements vary from state to state. Being able to continuously obtain state-level licenses means that a platform needs to establish more systematic compliance and operational capabilities. This kind of capability cannot be replicated simply by spending heavily on advertising in a short period of time.
However, compliance should not be deified either. Without product innovation, it is difficult for a platform to retain users; without sufficient liquidity, the trading experience will suffer; without localization capabilities, globalization can easily become “global registration, localized operations.”
So I would rather view a trading platform's moat as a city: compliance is the city wall, the product is the city gate, liquidity is the city's transportation system, and localization is the foundation that makes users genuinely willing to live there.
The 37 licenses are certainly worth watching, but what is even more worth observing is whether the platform can ultimately turn these “compliance assets” into lasting user trust.
After all, in the second half of the trading platform race, the competition may not be about who charges ahead fastest, but who can stand more firmly in a complex market.
