The second phase of Solana’s account rent reduction is now live, bringing the cumulative decrease to 27% from the initial level.

Abstract generation in progress
Mars Finance reports that Anza announced the second phase of the Solana account rent reduction proposal SIMD-0437 has gone live on the mainnet beta. In epoch 1033, the per-byte parameter used to calculate the minimum balance for rent exemption was reduced from 6333 lamports to 5080 lamports, a cumulative decline of approximately 27% from the initial level, lowering the SOL balance required to keep accounts rent-exempt. Anza also shared instructions for reclaiming excess SOL: users with the appropriate permissions can use the WithdrawExcessLamports instruction to withdraw SOL exceeding the minimum rent-exempt balance from token accounts, token mint accounts, and other accounts without closing them or affecting token balances. There is no fixed rollout schedule for subsequent phases. The third phase will be activated only after it is confirmed that on-chain state growth remains within a safe range; if necessary, the adjustment can be reversed through SIMD-0438.

Wait for the on-chain state to be safely reactivated in the third phase—the conservative approach, keeping SIMD-0438 as a brake pad. The Anza team is indeed steady.

The WithdrawExcessLamports instruction is thoughtfully designed: it can reclaim excess SOL without closing the account, making it DeFi-protocol-friendly.

5080 lamports/byte, the gas saved this time is enough for me to drink a few more cups of coffee☕

Rent has been reduced, so small accounts finally don’t have to lose so much SOL.
