August delivered a useful signal for the global crypto exchange market: trading activity recovered sharply, but the recovery was not distributed evenly across every venue. Total centralized-exchange volume climbed 12.7% month over month to $4.29 trillion, with spot volume rising 18.7% to $891 billion and derivatives increasing 11.3% to $3.40 trillion. Against that broader recovery, Gate maintained its position as the 4 global CEX by combined spot and derivatives volume, processing roughly $327 billion during August.
The composition of that $327 billion is more important than the headline ranking. Gate generated approximately $287 billion in derivatives volume, keeping it in fourth place globally in derivatives and representing roughly 88% of its combined spot-plus-derivatives activity. Average daily derivatives volume was around $11 billion, showing that the ranking is being supported by substantial recurring futures activity rather than a one-off spike.
Spot trading added another $40 billion, equivalent to about a 4.49% share of the global spot market. The contrast between spot and derivatives tells an interesting story about where Gate currently has the strongest traction. Its derivatives business is doing most of the heavy lifting for the overall ranking, while spot provides an additional base of liquidity and user activity.
But the more interesting development is happening underneath the traditional volume rankings.
Gate’s RWA perpetual futures volume surged 158% month over month to approximately $64.7 billion in August. Its market share in this category jumped from 5.32% to 12.6%, moving Gate into the global 3 position for RWA perpetuals. That means the exchange is not simply benefiting from the overall recovery in crypto trading; it is also gaining share in a newer derivatives segment tied to real-world-asset markets.
The scale of that increase is worth putting into perspective. A move from 5.32% to 12.6% means Gate more than doubled its share of the RWA-perpetual market in just one month, while volume itself increased by roughly 2.6 times. That combination suggests the growth was not purely the result of the entire market expanding. Gate was capturing a larger portion of the activity.
This is where the August numbers become more significant for the #Gate主流CEXTop4 discussion. A conventional exchange ranking can tell us who processed the most volume, but it does not necessarily tell us where future growth is coming from. Gate’s $287 billion derivatives volume explains why it remains firmly inside the global Top 4, while the 158% RWA-perpetual expansion provides a potential growth engine beyond traditional BTC and ETH futures.
There is also an important market-structure signal here. CEX derivatives still represented the overwhelming majority of August centralized-exchange activity, at approximately $3.40 trillion, versus $891 billion in spot. That environment naturally favors exchanges with strong derivatives infrastructure. Gate’s position therefore reflects both the broader market's return of leverage and its ability to participate in emerging products where traders are looking for additional opportunities.
However, I would not treat volume growth alone as proof that the ranking is permanently secured. Exchange positions can change quickly when market volatility, liquidity, fees, product demand and trader positioning shift. The more important test will be whether Gate can maintain elevated derivatives volume while converting its rapid RWA-perpetual expansion into sustained market share rather than a single-month acceleration.
My key takeaway from August is therefore different from simply saying “Gate is #4.” The stronger signal is that the #4 position is being supported by a $287 billion derivatives engine, while a rapidly expanding RWA-perpetual business is beginning to add another layer of competitive strength. If the 12.6% RWA-perpetual share proves durable and overall derivatives activity remains strong, Gate could have a more diversified foundation for its global ranking.
For me, the numbers to watch next are clear: $287B derivatives volume, $40B spot volume, 12.6% RWA-perpetual share and whether the 158% monthly RWA growth can be sustained. August shows Gate is not merely participating in the CEX volume recovery it is also trying to capture the next wave of derivatives growth.
That makes the Top-4 position more interesting than the ranking alone suggests: scale is already visible, but the real competitive story may be the speed at which Gate is building new volume around RWA perpetuals. @Gate_Square @Gate_Square #AAPL
