AMD Surpasses Qualcomm to Become World's Third-Largest Fabless Semiconductor Company
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has overtaken Qualcomm to become the world's third-largest fabless semiconductor company by revenue, marking a significant milestone in the company's remarkable turnaround under CEO Lisa Su. The shift, confirmed by industry analysts on September 13, 2026, reflects AMD's explosive growth in data center and AI accelerator markets, where its EPYC server processors and Instinct MI300 series GPUs have gained substantial share against Intel and Nvidia. AMD shares rose 2.54% on the news, while Qualcomm gained 2.84%, suggesting that investors view the competitive dynamic as healthy for both companies. The fabless semiconductor ranking, which excludes companies like Intel and Samsung that own their own fabrication facilities, now places AMD behind only Nvidia and Broadcom. AMD's rise has been fueled by its successful execution on multiple fronts: its Ryzen CPUs continue to gain share in the PC market, its EPYC processors have become the preferred choice for cloud providers including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud, and its Instinct accelerators are winning major AI training and inference contracts. The company's acquisition of Xilinx in 2022 also added FPGA capabilities that are increasingly valuable for AI inference at the edge. Qualcomm, meanwhile, remains the dominant player in smartphone chips and is expanding into automotive and IoT markets, but its revenue growth has been slower than AMD's as the PC and data center markets have outperformed smartphones. For content creators, this is a story about the shifting balance of power in the semiconductor industry and the rise of AMD as a credible challenger to Nvidia's AI dominance.
