Better-Than-Expected Results, but the Real Test Lies in Cash Flow
Oracle’s latest earnings report can be summed up in one sentence: **Growth is surging, and so is cash burn.** Q1 revenue reached $19.345 billion, up 30% year over year; adjusted EPS was $1.92, versus market expectations of approximately $1.74, while cloud infrastructure revenue surged 121% year over year. The share price rose rapidly after hours, clearly indicating that investors approved of the results.
But focusing only on EPS can easily cause investors to overlook another issue—there is no free lunch in the AI era. To expand its data centers and meet demand from AI customers, Oracle’s Q1 capital expenditures reached approximately $28.5 billion, resulting in negative free cash flow of around $5 billion. The company still expects full-year capital expenditures to reach $90 billion to $95 billion.
This means that what investors are buying now is essentially a ticket to “future growth.” As long as demand for AI cloud services continues to surge, massive investments could translate into higher revenue and stronger competitiveness; but if AI order growth slows, capital expenditures could become a heavy burden.
So this rise is worth viewing optimistically, but don’t rush to declare that Oracle is “taking off.” What Oracle truly needs to prove in the next phase is how it can turn massive AI orders into real profits and cash.
