DAY 13 — 30 DAYS INSIDE CANTON
WHAT IS TOKENIZATION, AND WHY DOES CANTON CARE ABOUT IT?
Tokenization sounds complicated.
But the basic idea is simple:
Take something that exists in the real world and represent its ownership or value digitally on a blockchain.
Think:
🏦 U.S. Treasury
💵 Money-market fund
📄 Bond
🏠 Real-world asset
Instead of relying entirely on traditional records to track ownership and movement, a token can represent that asset onchain.
But here's the important part:
Creating a token isn't the hard part.
The real challenge is what happens after the asset is tokenized.
Can it move privately?
Can it be used as collateral?
Can it interact with other assets?
Can it settle against digital cash?
Can institutions actually use it within their existing financial systems?
That's where Canton becomes interesting.
On September 8, Canton highlighted that DTCC and more than 30 market participants had already completed live production trades involving tokenized assets and onchain collateral/repo workflows.
And the next major step is getting even closer.
Canton says DTCC's Tokenization Service is preparing for an October launch, initially focusing on U.S. Treasuries held by DTCC members and custodied at DTC.
So this isn't simply:
“Let's put a Treasury on a blockchain.”
It's:
Tokenize the asset → connect it to financial applications → use it as collateral → move it → finance it → settle it.
That's the bigger picture.
And this is why I've started looking at Canton differently.
Tokenization creates the digital asset.
Canton is trying to provide the infrastructure that allows those assets to actually move and work together.
The token is only the beginning.
