Inflation is knocking again

The U.S. PPI rose 5.4% year-on-year in August, above the 5.3% forecast and accelerating significantly from July; it increased 0.4% month-on-month, while core PPI rose 0.2% month-on-month. On the surface, these are just changes of a few decimal points, but on the Federal Reserve’s decision-making table, they could become a rather difficult “hard nut to crack.”
In particular, prices on the goods side rose 1.1%, with energy becoming a major driver. Diesel prices surged 24.1% in one month, and rising oil prices are pushing inflationary pressure back through the industrial chain.
So what the market is most conflicted about now is not whether “PPI is high,” but whether this round of increases is short-term noise caused by an energy shock or will gradually turn into broader price pressure. If it is merely an energy disturbance, the Federal Reserve may not need to overreact; if CPI also remains hot, then things will get complicated—rate-cut expectations may have to be set aside for now, and even rate hikes could come back into discussion.
