Apple Foldable iPhone Duo Launches at $1,999, AAPL Shares Up 3% as Wall Street Weighs Pricing Strategy

Apple officially unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at its "Surprise and Shine" event on September 10, 2026, marking the company's most significant hardware redesign since the original iPhone. The device, which starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model and scales up to $2,999 for the 1TB configuration, features a book-style foldable design with a 5.5-inch outer cover display and a 7.8-inch inner display at a 4:3 aspect ratio—roughly the size of an iPad mini when opened. Powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip with 12GB of RAM and a combined 5,000 to 5,500mAh battery across two cells, the iPhone Duo includes two 48-megapixel rear cameras and replaces Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID sensor to achieve its ultra-thin 4.5mm unfolded profile. The launch positions Apple against Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series and Huawei's newly announced Mate XT 2 tri-fold, which starts at 19,999 yuan ($2,980). Wall Street's reaction was immediate, with AAPL shares rising 3.11% as investors weighed the pricing strategy against potential supply constraints and consumer demand. Analysts at TrendForce had projected a starting price between $2,099 and $2,299, making Apple's $1,999 entry point more aggressive than expected, signaling the company's intent to capture market share in the premium foldable segment. However, Barclays analyst Tim Long cautioned that supply constraints could push retail availability to December, while CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook just eight days before the launch, faces his first major test in restoring Apple's hardware momentum. The event also saw the debut of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, while the standard iPhone 18 and a successor to the iPhone Air were pushed to spring 2027 as Apple splits its launch cycle. For investors, the key question is whether the iPhone Duo can replicate the success of the iPhone X in 2017—a redesign that reignited Apple's growth and set the stage for a multi-year supercycle. The $1,999 price point, while high, may be justified by the foldable form factor and the premium materials, including a LiquidMetal hinge and near-creaseless OLED panel developed by Samsung Display specifically for Apple's standards. With the foldable market still in its early stages, Apple's entry could accelerate mainstream adoption and pressure competitors to innovate further.

Huawei Mate XT 2, a tri-fold, is priced at $2,980, while Apple's dual-fold is priced at $1,999. This pricing strategy is clearly aimed at Samsung.

Starting at $1,999, even lower than TrendForce’s forecast, Apple’s pricing is quite aggressive this time—it looks like it wants to seize the high-end foldable phone market.

Will it be delayed until December before it can be bought? The old supply constraint problem again—scalpers are going to have a field day.
