【Stock Watch | Bitmine Has Increased Its ETH Holdings for 66 Consecutive Weeks—Can This Stock Be Held Long Term?】
Data as of September 8: Bitmine added another 28,086 ETH last week, marking 66 consecutive weeks of uninterrupted weekly ETH purchases. As of September 7, its total ETH holdings reached 5,929,198.
A brief introduction to the company:
Bitmine Immersion Technologies was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Its businesses include the well-known Ethereum and Bitcoin treasury management, as well as mining hardware sales, equipment leasing, power hosting, and blockchain consulting services. Strategically, it is gradually reducing its self-operated mining business and shifting its focus toward the digital asset treasury model for publicly listed companies.
The market's biggest attraction is its mechanical weekly dollar-cost averaging into Ethereum.
A whale continuously accumulating coins makes for a very appealing story, but a stock ≠ directly buying ETH. Whether it is suitable for buying and holding long term needs to be examined from both sides.
🟢Core Bullish Arguments for the Stock
1. Holding massive ETH reserves, with huge asset upside
Nearly 5.93 million ETH are the company's core assets. If Ethereum remains in a long-term bull market, the company's net assets will rise accordingly. Moreover, the vast majority of its ETH is staked, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in passive staking income each year, which can in turn continuously provide funds for further purchases, creating a positive cycle.
2. The business model transformation is complete. The company is gradually divesting its asset-heavy mining business, avoiding electricity-price and hashrate-cycle fluctuations in the mining industry, and shifting toward treasury management + hardware sales + consulting services. This narrative aligns with Wall Street institutions' preference for publicly listed digital asset companies.
3. It consistently and publicly executes a fixed-amount buying strategy, giving the company relatively high transparency and attracting a group of long-term investors who believe in the crypto sector.
🔴Risks, and the Core Reasons Not to Hold It Long Term Blindly
1. The stock price is highly tied to ETH market conditions, creating dual volatility risk
It is not a pure cryptocurrency; it is a publicly listed company stock.
When ETH rises, the stock may not rise in tandem. But if Ethereum's price undergoes a sharp correction, the company will directly incur huge unrealized losses on its books, immediately impacting its financial statements and net assets. The company has already recorded substantial unrealized losses, and its stock price has already suffered a double-digit decline this year.
The stock also adds equity-market valuation volatility, creating dual risks.
2. Its holdings are approaching 4.9% of the circulating supply, nearing the critical 5% threshold
The market has yet to see a clear plan for the company's next steps. If it stops accumulating or sells ETH to generate cash for its financial statements, it will directly impact two levels: ETH prices would come under pressure, while market confidence would quickly weaken.
Weekly purchases make the story; future selling will be the real test.
3. Hidden risks in the business structure
The treasury strategy is a double-edged sword. Continuously spending real money to sweep up assets on the secondary market will consume substantial corporate cash flow. If crypto enters a bear market, continued large-scale purchases will keep eroding corporate profits. Although staking generates cash flow, staked assets cannot all be liquidated at any time, making liquidity a concern.
4. Corporate operating risks
Although it has hardware and consulting businesses, a large portion of the company's market capitalization is supported by its ETH holdings. Revenue from its traditional businesses accounts for a limited share, making it essentially a crypto asset portfolio with an additional publicly listed company shell.
Is it suitable for long-term buying and holding? If you want to bet on Ethereum's long-term market prospects, buying Bitmine stock is not the same as directly buying Ethereum.
- Suitable for: Investors who are highly bullish on ETH's future major cycle, can withstand the intense dual volatility of US stocks and crypto, can accept billions-level changes in unrealized losses, and can continuously track the company's weekly purchases, financial statements, and subsequent actions after the 5% threshold.
- Not suitable for: Ordinary investors who want to hold long term without monitoring, cannot withstand substantial drawdowns, and are simply following the trend of “whales accumulating coins.”
A whale's continued coin purchases are only the surface; stock investing focuses on the company's overall operations, asset quality, and subsequent exit plan.
