Walmart China Signs Largest Single Supply Chain Investment in 30 Years in Xiangshan

Walmart China signed the "East China Smart Logistics Hub" project agreement on September 8 in Xiangshan, Zhejiang Province, marking the largest single supply chain investment since the company entered the Chinese market 30 years ago. The project involves a comprehensive upgrade and reconstruction of Walmart's existing Xiangshan distribution center, expanding total floor space from approximately 48,000 square meters to 278,000 square meters. Daily processing capacity is expected to increase approximately fourfold. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with completion and operation targeted for 2029. According to the plan, the upgraded East China Smart Logistics Hub will consist of five buildings. The investment reflects Walmart's continued commitment to the Chinese market and its strategy to enhance supply chain efficiency through smart logistics infrastructure, positioning the company for stronger operational capabilities in one of its most important international markets. WMT declined 1.33% on the session.

With a five-year construction period and work not starting until 2026, it doesn’t seem urgent, but the supply chain really is a case of slow work yielding fine results.

Xiangshan is a brilliant choice—located in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, it maximizes reach across East China.

Walmart’s investment is massive—the largest single investment in 30 years, betting on East China. It looks determined to deepen its presence in China’s supply chain.

The largest single investment in thirty years—not opening stores, but building logistics warehouses—shows that retail’s endgame is a battle over fulfillment efficiency.

From 48,000 to 278,000, that expansion… basically creating five more versions of itself on the spot?
