Things to note when trading online

Online trading requires a strict focus on capital preservation, risk control, and platform security to protect your money from unexpected market shifts.

Broker Security & Regulation

Regulatory Licensing: Verify that your broker is registered and regulated by a major financial authority (such as the SEC/FINRA in the US, FCA in the UK, or ASIC in Australia).

Account Controls: Turn on two factor authentication (2FA) using an authenticator app, and avoid conducting trades over unsecured public Wi-Fi networks.

Capital Protection & Position Sizing

The 1%–2% Rule: Never risk more than 1% to 2% of your total account capital on a single open position.

Automated Exits: Set hard stop loss and take profit orders when entering a trade to prevent emotional holding during drawdowns.

Risk to Reward Ratios: Target setups with at least a 1:2 risk reward ratio so profits from winning trades outweigh losses over a series of trades.

Execution & Hidden Costs

Fee Awareness: Factor in bid ask spreads, commissions, deposit/withdrawal fees, and overnight financing (swap) rates if holding leveraged assets.

Order Types: Use limit orders during periods of high market volatility rather than market orders to protect against price slippage.

Leverage Management: Keep leverage low; while it amplifies potential gains, it multiplies account losses at the exact same rate.

A transaction over public WiFi? That’s really reckless.

Limit orders can indeed save a considerable amount on slippage during periods of high volatility.

Check the regulatory license first; fly-by-night platforms will abscond without hesitation.

When fees eat into profits, many people simply don’t read the fine print when opening an account.

2FA really is the bare minimum—don't dismiss it as a hassle.

The 1% rule may seem conservative, but those who survive are the ones who follow it strictly.

Once you set a stop-loss, you have to accept it—don't mess with it.
