#AltcoinOISurpassesBitcoinforFirstTimeinOveraYear ALTCOIN OI JUST FLIPPED BITCOIN — AND THAT MATTERS.

For the first time since December 2024, aggregate open interest in altcoin perpetual futures has moved above Bitcoin’s, according to Coinalyze data. Bitcoin perpetual OI is around $23.9B, while altcoin positioning has collectively moved higher.

This is a clear sign that traders are becoming more aggressive further out on the risk curve. Altcoins outside the top 10 have also pushed above $200B in market cap, gaining more than 10% since the start of September.

But there is an important distinction:
Higher OI ≠ guaranteed bullishness.

Open interest measures outstanding leveraged positions, not whether traders are net long or short. The current setup can fuel an upside move through short liquidations, but excessive leverage can also turn into a sharp liquidation cascade if momentum fails.

My read:
The market is showing early signs of an altcoin rotation, but I would watch BTC dominance, funding rates, spot volume and liquidation data before calling this a confirmed altseason.

The opportunity is getting bigger — but so is the leverage risk.

Are we entering the next major altcoin phase, or is this leverage getting too crowded? 👀
