BTC is sitting around $80K, but the more interesting story is happening one layer below.

Liquid reportedly saw around 4,000 BTC, worth roughly $320M, move out through a peg-out process in just 23 minutes.

What makes this unusual?

This doesn’t appear to be a traditional private-key hack.

The federation’s PAK remained intact, and there was reportedly no 11-of-15 multisig breach.

Instead, the incident appears linked to a vulnerability that allowed exploit-created L-BTC to pass peg-out validation as legitimate.

That distinction matters.

A sidechain can have security risks that don’t mean Bitcoin itself has been compromised.

The “white hat” claim is another question entirely. If the funds are returned after the vulnerability is patched, the story looks very different.

Until then, labels are less important than evidence.

The bigger lesson for crypto:

Don’t only ask, “Can someone steal the keys?”

Ask, “Can the system incorrectly recognize something as legitimate?”

That’s where some of the most important security assumptions live. $BTC

Whether they’re a white hat or not, return the money first before discussing labels—anything said now is just an empty promise.

We used to always ask whose hands held the keys; now we have to ask whether the system will mistake one person for another—the perspective is completely different.

The BTC-margined side is unaffected, but a hole has been poked in the sidechain’s trust assumptions this time, and the proposed fix needs to undergo a public audit.

320M in tuition fees—I hope the entire industry can learn from this. Don’t do it all over again with another sidechain next time.

The Liquid incident served as a wake-up call for all sidechains: withdrawal verification is a hundred times more complex than deposit verification.
