. LG Uplus Forms Alliance to Develop 100MW Modular AI Data Centers

LG Uplus announced on September 6 that it has formed the "PMDC Alliance" with four local construction and design companies to develop standardized models for prefabricated modular AI data centers. The partners include GS Engineering & Construction, Xi C&A, Gansam Architects, and D&O CM. The memorandum of understanding was signed on September 4 at LG Uplus's Pyeongchon Mega Center in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province.

Under the agreement, LG Uplus will establish operational standards and technical requirements, while the construction partners will contribute expertise in modular building design and rapid deployment. The alliance aims to develop 100MW modular AI data centers that can be assembled more quickly than traditional data centers, addressing the surging demand for AI computing infrastructure. Prefabricated modular construction allows for faster deployment, greater scalability, and potentially lower costs compared to conventional data center builds.

This initiative reflects the intensifying competition among telecommunications companies to capture AI infrastructure opportunities, as the explosive growth of large language models and generative AI applications continues to drive unprecedented demand for computing capacity. The partnership also positions LG Uplus to offer differentiated AI data center solutions to enterprise customers seeking to deploy their own AI workloads. The PMDC Alliance represents a strategic bet on the future of AI infrastructure, combining telecommunications expertise with construction and design capabilities to create a vertically integrated solution for the rapidly growing AI data center market.

What does 100 MW mean? It could probably power several thousand H100s—the AI arms race in South Korea is heating up.
