#USAugustNFPBeatsExpectations
The U.S. August Non-Farm Payrolls report is out, and it delivered a clear beat.
Key Numbers:
- Nonfarm payrolls: **+162,000**
- Consensus expectation: ~55,000–65,000
- Unemployment rate: Held steady at **4.1%**
- Private sector jobs: **+127,000**
- Average hourly earnings: **+0.3%** month-over-month to $37.75 (YoY +3.1%)
This marks the strongest monthly job gain since March and comes in roughly three times higher than economists had forecast. Prior months were also revised higher July was lifted from an initial -23,000 to +21,000, and June was revised upward as well.
Where the jobs came from:
- Food services and drinking places led with **+59,000**
- Local government education added **+42,000**
- Manufacturing continued its recovery with **+16,000**
- Health care and construction also contributed solid gains
The labor force participation rate rose to 61.6%, and the broader U-6 underemployment measure edged lower.
Overall, the report shows a labor market that remains more resilient than recent softer prints had suggested. The combination of stronger-than-expected hiring, stable unemployment, and moderate wage growth keeps the focus on the upcoming inflation data as the next key input for the Federal Reserve.
Clean, decisive beat.
