U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls Surge 162,000 in August, Nearly Triple Forecast, Boosting September Rate Hike Odds to 58.6%
Data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that U.S. nonfarm payrolls added 162,000 jobs in August, nearly three times the market consensus forecast of 56,000. Revisions to June and July data added a combined 55,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. In response to this robust data, the CME FedWatch tool raised the market-implied probability of a September Federal Reserve rate hike from 49.4% to 58.6%, with some data sources indicating odds briefly exceeded 60%. The U.S. dollar index strengthened following the release, with the USD/KRW exchange rate touching 1,345.50 during the session. The strong August jobs report completely reversed market expectations of a cooling labor market, reinforcing the Fed's "higher for longer" narrative. The August U.S. CPI data, scheduled for release on September 11, will now serve as the critical variable determining whether the Fed proceeds with a rate hike at the September FOMC meeting. Persistent uncertainty around Fed policy remains the single largest overhang for risk assets, as higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding crypto assets and compress valuations across growth-oriented sectors.
