U.S. August nonfarm payrolls “blockbuster”! Rate-cut expectations suddenly cooled?
The U.S. August nonfarm payrolls were indeed a bit “strong.” New jobs came in at 162k, directly blowing past market expectations of just over 50k, while the previous two months’ figures were revised up by a combined 55k. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. On the headline figure alone, this is not a cooling labor market, but one that suddenly stepped on the gas.
The market’s most direct reaction was that the Federal Reserve’s rate-cut logic began conflicting again. Investors had previously bet on an economic slowdown, believing that weaker employment would create room for rate cuts; now that nonfarm payrolls have suddenly exceeded expectations, interest-rate markets are naturally repricing, supporting the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields while weighing on risk assets in the short term.
But in my view, we cannot see 162k and immediately declare that the “U.S. economy is taking off.” Looking more closely at the composition, the food services and bars sector contributed 59k jobs, while local government education added 42k; together, the two accounted for more than 100k jobs. The information sector, by contrast, lost 23k jobs.
So this nonfarm payrolls report looks more like “strong on the surface, but structurally mixed.” What truly determines the market’s next direction is not just the number of jobs, but also inflation and wages.
For risk assets such as BTC and the Nasdaq, the biggest short-term variable has shifted from “when will rates be cut” to “does the Federal Reserve actually dare to continue easing?” The market may not reverse immediately, but volatility will likely rise.
Nonfarm payrolls told the market: the rate-cut card may not be so easy to play.#美国8月非农超预期
