FBI Investigates Massive Driver’s License Data Sale

A dark-web service reportedly claims to have more than 153 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s-license scans available for sale.
The FBI is investigating the case, but the 153M figure should not be treated as 153M confirmed unique victims. The actual scope remains unclear.
This is another reminder that personal data can become a serious target on underground markets.
Protect your identity, stay alert for phishing attempts, and avoid sharing sensitive documents through unverified channels.

Gate is trending again, but the core issue is that the buying and selling of data on the dark web is rampant. Ordinary people can only avoid exposing themselves online.

153M sounds alarming, but it’s still unclear how much of it consists of duplicate or fake data. The key is not to enter personal information into links of unknown origin.

The dark web sells more than just data—it sells complete identity profiles. If you receive a suspicious email, don’t click; verify its source first.

153 million—even if only one-third of it is real, that’s still enough to cause serious trouble. ID photos are sensitive; really, don’t store them on your phone and sync them indiscriminately.

150 million driver’s license records are circulating on the black market, and the FBI has gotten involved, but the figure may not be accurate. Don’t share photos of your ID documents indiscriminately—phishing emails are targeting exactly this kind of data.

The FBI can investigate all it wants, but it may take several more months for the results to come out. Protecting yourself first is better than anything else.

Even scanned copies of driver’s licenses can become commodities—the black-market industry chain is more developed than imagined. Protect your identity documents; don’t casually photograph and upload them.
