Mars Finance reports that SK Hynix is increasing its investment in a semiconductor production base in the southwestern Gwangju region. The company is reportedly internally discussing a plan to advance investment in the Yongin semiconductor cluster and Gwangju in parallel. As the Yongin project is a long-term investment and construction project, the company is developing an overall plan to advance an investment strategy alongside its concentrated investment in Yongin while taking Gwangju’s actual circumstances into account. It is currently discussing whether to allocate some of the equipment originally planned for the new Yongin factory to Gwangju or place additional orders for new equipment for Gwangju, with the specific approach to be determined based on circumstances. In terms of progress, site preparation and foundation work at the Gwangju military airport site are expected to begin in 2027, with the first wafer fab targeted for completion in 2029. Investment in the new Yongin factory is also progressing as planned. According to industry sources, SK Hynix aims to bring Phase 1 of the first factory’s cleanroom online in February 2027 and Phase 2 in August of the same year. (dealsite)

Yongin’s cleanroom will be operational next year, while Gwangju is still in the site preparation phase. This gap shows that Yongin’s priority remains unchanged, while Gwangju looks more like an incremental expansion.

Gwangju’s southwestern capacity expansion and the Yongin cluster are advancing on two fronts, further increasing South Korea’s domestic capacity density—a positive for upstream equipment suppliers.

Whether to allocate Longren equipment to Gwangju or place additional orders, this decision point is worth watching, as it involves the capex pace and supply chain negotiations.

How much of the capacity transfer Gwangju can absorb this time is crucial; with Yongin Phases 1 and 2 moving at such a tight pace, equipment scheduling is probably a discipline in itself.

Starting construction at two sites simultaneously in 2027, SK Hynix is playing a big hand, but Gwangju’s first wafer fab won’t be ready until 2029—the timing window depends on the memory cycle.
