As U.S.-Iran tensions escalate, crude oil is the first to “sound the alarm”: a 5.7% rise is no joke

U.S.-Iran tensions deteriorate, sending crude oil up 5.7% in one go: what the market truly fears is not war, but oil shipments being disrupted
Crude oil’s sudden surge this time appears on the surface to be driven by geopolitical conflict, but behind it is actually a repricing of supply-chain risks.
As the U.S.-Iran military confrontation escalates again, the market has begun to worry once more about the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The latest news shows Brent crude at one point approaching $95, while WTI broke above $91; oil prices had already posted a clear gain of more than $4 in the previous session.
Why is the market so sensitive?
Because the Strait of Hormuz is not an ordinary waterway, but a critical chokepoint for global energy transportation. Any blockade, attack, or surge in shipping insurance costs could suddenly make oil that was previously flowing normally much harder to transport.
So traders first put a question mark over oil prices: if supply is genuinely affected, how much higher can oil prices go?
That is the core logic behind the 5.7%.
But I believe investors cannot focus only on how much oil prices have risen right now; they also need to watch how long the conflict lasts.
If it is merely a short-term military clash, the risk premium could quickly unwind; if the situation expands further, oil prices could shift from an “emotional rise” to a “supply-driven rise.”
And once energy prices remain elevated, the second shoe to drop that the market fears most is inflation.
So the impact of this U.S.-Iran situation on the market may go far beyond crude oil.
What is rising in oil prices is the number; what may truly be rising is the risk premium on global assets.#美伊局势恶化原油大涨5.7%
