US-Iran Tensions Send Oil Prices Surging
Oil prices jumped sharply as renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran intensified concerns about global energy supplies. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude surged around 5.7%, briefly moving above $90 per barrel, while Brent crude also climbed strongly toward the mid-$90 range.
The latest rally followed renewed U.S. strikes on Iranian targets and Iran’s retaliatory actions, raising fears that the conflict could further disrupt oil production and transportation across the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz remains the biggest concern because it is a crucial route for global oil shipments. Any prolonged disruption could tighten supplies and push prices substantially higher.
The market is already dealing with reduced traffic through the strait, although recent data showed approximately 17 million barrels of crude passed through the waterway on Monday, indicating that some flows remain operational.
Higher oil prices could create broader economic pressure by increasing transportation, manufacturing and energy costs. For central banks, persistent energy inflation could complicate interest-rate decisions.
For financial markets, the escalation increases volatility and may encourage investors to seek traditional safe-haven assets. Meanwhile, oil-sensitive economies and import-dependent countries could face higher costs if crude remains elevated.
Traders will closely monitor further military developments, shipping activity through Hormuz and diplomatic efforts. A sustained escalation could keep a significant geopolitical premium embedded in oil prices.
