Gate.io officially launched U.S. stock options trading on September 2, 2026. This is a cash-settled product in USDT that lets users trade options on major U.S. stocks through the Gate App without opening a separate U.S. brokerage or margin account.
Key Features from the Official Announcement
- No offshore bank account or traditional U.S. stock account required. Settlement is entirely in USDT (cash-settled, no physical share delivery). Users pay the option premium in USDT when buying; at expiration or exercise the platform settles the difference in USDT based on its rules.
- Zero platform fees at launch: Platform fee $0, options commission $0, and exercise/assignment fee $0 per contract. Third-party U.S. regulatory/clearing fees still apply (collected and remitted by Gate):
- Buy side ≈ $0.0373 per contract (OCC + ORF + CAT).
- Sell side ≈ same base + SEC fee (transaction amount × 0.0000206, min $0.01) + FINRA TAF ($0.00279 per contract, min $0.01, max $9.79).
- Initial underlyings (9 stocks): NVDA (NVIDIA), TSLA (Tesla), AAPL (Apple), META (Meta Platforms), AMD, MU (Micron), AMZN (Amazon), GOOGL (Alphabet Class A), AVGO (Broadcom). More stocks/ETFs planned later. Available contracts, expirations, and strikes are shown on the trading page.
- Access: Update Gate App to V8.35.0 (or later), log in, open/activate a Stock Account, then go to TradFi > Stock Options. Select Call or Put, expiration, strike, review premium/bid-ask/multiplier, enter quantity, and submit.
- Trading hours (initial phase): Regular U.S. market hours only — 9:30–16:00 ET, Monday–Friday. No pre-market or after-hours yet. Holidays and early closes follow U.S. market notices.
- Funds & margin: No separate margin account needed for buying options (pay the premium). Settlement is pure cash in USDT; users do not need extra capital to buy shares or hold stock. Settlement price uses an average of the underlying over a ~30-minute window before official settlement time (to align with upstream brokers).
Standard U.S. equity options typically have a 100-share multiplier (premium × 100 × contracts), and Gate’s help materials align with this convention for stock options.
Related Launch Promotion
There is a concurrent “U.S. Stock Options Launch Month” event (Sept 2–27, 2026 UTC) with rewards such as fractional shares of the underlying for valid weekly trades (premium ≥ 100 USDT counts as valid), chances at whole shares of featured stocks (NVDA, TSLA, AAPL, GOOGL), and volume-based prize pools.
Practical Analysis & Context
Advantages for crypto users:
- Friction reduction: Trade options on high-profile tech/AI/semiconductor names (the “Magnificent 7”-adjacent + key chip names) using existing USDT balances on a familiar crypto exchange interface.
- True cash settlement removes the complexity and capital requirements of physical delivery or traditional brokerage onboarding.
- Very low explicit platform costs at launch (only pass-through regulatory fees).
- Fits Gate’s broader TradFi expansion (real U.S. stocks, tokenized stocks/gStocks, stock futures/CFDs, multi-market equities).
Important limitations & risks:
- Hours-restricted: Only regular session initially — misses overnight/earnings after-hours moves that often drive options volatility.
- Cash-settled only: No actual share ownership or delivery; pure directional/volatility exposure settled in USDT.
- Liquidity & product maturity: New product; initial liquidity, available strikes/expirations, and depth may be thinner than established U.S. options markets (Cboe, etc.). Bid-ask spreads and slippage matter, especially on less liquid strikes.
- Leverage is inherent to options, not platform margin for buyers: Buying calls/puts gives leveraged exposure limited to the premium paid (maximum loss = premium + fees). Selling options is more complex and capital-intensive (though the announcement emphasizes no separate margin account is required for participation; always check live margin rules).
- Regulatory/third-party fees still exist and can add up on high-volume or frequent trading.
- Regional/eligibility restrictions: Availability depends on user jurisdiction and KYC; not all countries/users will have access.
- General options risks: Options can expire worthless. High volatility names (NVDA, TSLA, etc.) amplify both gains and losses. Settlement price methodology (30-min average) differs slightly from pure last-print settlement.
- Not investment advice: This is a platform product launch. Options trading involves substantial risk of loss and is suitable only for those who understand the mechanics, Greeks, time decay, etc.
How it compares to traditional U.S. options or other crypto offerings:
- Traditional brokers (Interactive Brokers, Tastytrade, etc.) offer physical delivery possibilities, deeper liquidity, extended hours on some products, and more underlyings, but require fiat accounts, U.S. brokerage setup, and usually higher commissions or platform fees.
- Other crypto platforms have experimented with stock options or tokenized equity derivatives; Gate’s version emphasizes zero platform commission + pure USDT cash settlement + no extra account friction.
- Gate already offers crypto options (cash-settled European-style on BTC/ETH etc.) and various stock products; this bridges the two worlds more tightly.
Bottom line: This is a meaningful step in Gate’s TradFi push, lowering barriers for crypto-native users who want leveraged directional or hedging exposure to major U.S. tech names without leaving the platform or dealing with traditional banking rails. The zero platform fees and USDT settlement are the strongest near-term selling points. Success will depend on liquidity build-out, expansion of underlyings/hours, and user adoption.
