#加密市场观察 Warsh Sends Hawkish Signal, Precious Metals and Bitcoin Plunge Together—How Significant Is the Impact?
At the Jackson Hole central banking symposium, Warsh’s hawkish remarks directly rewrote global asset pricing. Precious metals and cryptocurrencies saw sharp overnight pullbacks, inflicting heavy losses on many long positions.
The core message was clear: There will be no compromise on the 2% inflation target. The current pace of inflation decline is insufficient, and if underlying inflation cannot quickly move toward the target, the Federal Reserve still has room to tighten policy further.
In just one night, the market’s probability of a September rate hike rose sharply, U.S. Treasury yields surged, the dollar strengthened in tandem, and expectations for global liquidity took a sudden turn.
The underlying logic behind this round of declines is clear. Gold and Bitcoin are both non-yielding assets and do not generate interest returns themselves. When U.S. Treasury yields rise, holding Treasuries offers higher risk-free returns, prompting funds to exit gold and crypto markets and move into bonds, directly weighing on the prices of both asset classes. The market reaction was devastating: spot gold plunged below the $4,500 mark, while silver’s decline widened further. The crypto market was not spared either, with Bitcoin falling in tandem, large numbers of leveraged positions being wiped out, and nearly 100,000 traders liquidated within 24 hours, exposing the risks of high leverage.
Many people may wonder why gold, which previously benefited from both safe-haven and inflation-hedging narratives, fell so decisively as soon as negative factors emerged.
In essence, the market’s top priority at this stage is expectations for Federal Reserve interest rates. Geopolitical safe-haven demand is merely a secondary bonus. Once rate-hike expectations rise, the interest-rate narrative will overshadow the safe-haven narrative. Bitcoin is also no longer moving independently; it increasingly follows fluctuations in dollar liquidity, and high-risk assets are bound to come under pressure when liquidity-tightening expectations intensify.
Looking ahead, two sets of signals should be closely monitored.
First, U.S. inflation data. If inflation rebounds, hawkish expectations will strengthen further, and precious metals and cryptocurrencies will remain under pressure; if inflation resumes its decline, the market will once again price in expectations for easing.
Second, monitor the persistence of U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar, which are the core anchors determining the medium-term direction of the two major asset classes.
In the short term, sentiment has clearly shifted. After the huge gains earlier, the market has entered a valuation digestion phase.
For ordinary investors, it is important to beware of leveraging up to speculate at elevated levels and not equate a short-term pullback directly with a bottom-fishing opportunity. In markets driven by a reversal in macro expectations, volatility will be amplified several times over. Waiting for confirmation of signals is far more important than rushing to enter.
