While Unitree is celebrated for its impressive physical feats, industry experts point out that many of its core algorithms for movement are based on open-source code from early Boston Dynamics research . The real challenge lies not in the legs but in the complex "hands" and "brain" tasks, which Unitree has yet to fully master .

Hands and brains are indeed tough challenges; with only legs, it can only be considered a toy. Hopefully Unitree won’t focus solely on showing off its technology and will think more about how to use it in real-world scenarios.

Experts only see innovation in papers, but engineering optimization and mass-production capabilities are equally core barriers. Unitree’s ability to bring costs down is itself a real accomplishment.

There’s no shame in starting with open source; the real skill lies in putting it into practice.
