Many people think robots are about to take off, but Wang Xingxing poured cold water on that idea: embodied AI is still climbing uphill. Forget a ChatGPT moment—even calling them “usable” is still a stretch. Factory environments are so complex that it’s already impressive if a robot can adapt to one set of operating conditions; switching to another production line requires recalibration. How could they replace humans at scale?

Wang Xingxing said the ChatGPT moment is still a long way off. I think that’s not pessimism but clear-headedness. Humanoid robots look impressive right now, but their shortcomings are exposed when they are actually put to work: perception, decision-making, and execution are not integrated, and their generalization capabilities can’t keep up, so real-world deployment is naturally slow. Don’t rush to hype them up—build a solid foundation first.
