#BTC回调至79000美元 BTC Surges and Fails at the 80k Mark: Don’t Chase the Rally—Watch These Three Key Signals
01
Core Data
Price: 81265 to 78111
First, the price. BTC reached a high of $81265, then fell all the way back to $78111. It is currently trading at around $79000, with its 24-hour decline narrowing to about 2%. ETH is at $2443, while SOL is around $96 after falling more than 3% after previously breaking above $100.
Sentiment is moving faster than price
The Fear and Greed Index surged to 74, entering the “Greed” zone and hitting a new yearly high—it was still in the “Fear” zone a month ago and at 41, or “Neutral,” a week ago.
Market sentiment has recovered significantly faster than price has broken out. Capital flows are the hardest numbers today. Capital flows are the hardest numbers today. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $314 million in net inflows in a single day, with BlackRock’s IBIT alone absorbing $284 million and posting net inflows for the seventh consecutive trading day, bringing cumulative net inflows in August to $3.03 billion; spot Ethereum ETFs simultaneously recorded $180 million in net inflows.
On the stablecoin front, Circle issued 5 billion USDC over the past week, including 500 million newly added on Solana within six hours. Money is entering the market, and it is coming through compliant channels.
The structure of the rise raises questions
But the structure of the rise raises questions. Glassnode data shows that BTC futures open interest has fallen to a five-month low, indicating that a considerable portion of the move from 65k to 81k was driven by forced short covering rather than a surge of new buying. Clearing leverage is a positive, but it also means that sufficient upside fuel has not yet accumulated. Macro catalysts are packed into the next 72 hours
On the macro front, the next 72 hours are packed with catalysts: at 20:30 tonight, the U.S. will release July core PCE, with the market expecting a year-on-year reading of 3.3%, still well above the 2% target; on Friday, the Jackson Hole meeting will be held, where the Federal Reserve chair will deliver the first major speech since taking office; next Thursday, the Bank of Japan will announce its rate decision, with the market assigning a relatively high probability to a hike to 1.25%.
Any surprise at any stage could directly hit the 80k mark.
02
Whale and Smart Money Moves
BTC OG Insider Whale Adds to Position
The most conspicuous whale accumulation came from Garrett Jin, an agent labeled on-chain as the “BTC OG insider whale”: he added 600 BTC long positions at an average price of $79k in the early morning, worth $47.4 million, lifting his total position to $147 million. Buying the dip, his direction is clear.
Institutional Accumulation Has Not Stopped
Institutional accumulation has not stopped.
A new address suspected of being linked to BitMine swept up 20k ETH in 50 minutes, worth $48.89 million—the U.S.-listed company already holds 5.847 million ETH, or 4.84% of Ethereum’s total supply. It is only 187k ETH away from its self-set 5% target, and at its recent purchase rate of 32k ETH per week, it could complete the target in six weeks.
Bitwise clients have bought SOL for five consecutive trading days, with cumulative net purchases approaching $1 billion.
Shorts are running.
Market maker Wintermute cut its short exposure on Hyperliquid from $210 million all the way down to $80.48 million, eliminating 60% of it. There is an even more extreme case: a short address that came within 2% of liquidation yesterday
closed its 559 BTC short position and then opened a $34 million long position.
Of course, there are also dissenters. One whale sold 301.9k HYPE in a single transaction, cashing out $24.4 million and locking in $5.3 million in profit; on the other side, the “100% win rate” smart money account has rolled over its HYPE position for 10 consecutive wins, with $2.1 million in unrealized gains. The same asset, completely opposite views on both sides—this is a typical divergence-driven market.
03
Overall Assessment
80k will be difficult to hold in the short term, but the pullback does not change the medium-term logic
80k will be difficult to hold in one attempt in the short term
Of the $566 million in liquidations across the market over the past 24 hours, $331 million came from short positions. The essence of this rally is a short squeeze, not a move led by fresh capital. Although on-chain capital flows turned positive for the first time in nearly three months, a CryptoQuant analyst explicitly said that demand strength remains at a historical low. Without new money, there is not enough confidence to break through 80k in one go.
The pullback does not change the medium-term logic
BlackRock has just lowered the in-kind creation and redemption threshold for IBIT from $25 million to $1 million, effectively opening an inexpensive entry channel for large funds; Circle issued 5 billion USDC in one week, with stablecoin ammunition continuing to be loaded. This money will ultimately need somewhere to go, and crypto assets are currently one of the few categories still seeing sustained net buying.
Institutions are far more optimistic than retail investors
Bernstein forecasts that Bitcoin will reach $150k by mid-2027 and $300k in 2029; Mizuho said the quality of this rebound is better than previous ones and is not driven by high leverage; Jiang Zhuoer said the probability of BTC falling back below $67k is extremely low, while ETH remains the engine of this rally. Bullish views should not be fully trusted, of course, but the bears truly have yet to produce any convincing arguments.
The direction now hinges on two signals
As for direction, it now hinges on two signals:
How the Federal Reserve chair speaks at Jackson Hole on Friday, and whether the Bank of Japan raises rates in September. Any surprise could first create a more comfortable buying opportunity.$BTC
