The UK's unluckiest man: the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoin are permanently sleeping in a landfill.
The protagonist is James Howells, an IT engineer from Newport, Wales, UK, and this is one of the crypto world’s most notorious “lost fortune” cases.
How it happened
When Bitcoin was first created in 2009, James mined/purchased approximately 8,000 Bitcoin in its early days and stored the private keys on an old computer hard drive. In 2013, while cleaning up clutter at home, his former girlfriend Hafina Eddy mistakenly discarded the unused hard drive as ordinary rubbish. It was eventually transported to the local Docksway landfill and buried deep underground.
At the time, Bitcoin’s price was extremely low, so neither of them initially paid much attention; after Bitcoin subsequently surged, James realized that the assets were lost, but by then the hard drive had been buried beneath a layer of rubbish over ten meters thick.
11-year standoff: the lengthy battle with the local council
After pinpointing the approximate location where the hard drive was buried, James repeatedly applied to the Newport City Council for permission to excavate the landfill, but was rejected several times:
1. Council’s reasoning: Large-scale excavation would cause soil pollution and ecological damage, while the project costs would be extremely high. Once household waste enters the municipal landfill system, ownership belongs to the local government, and individuals have no right to excavate without authorization;
2. James proposed plans multiple times: He promised to share part of the proceeds with the council after recovering the drive, and even planned to use AI detection, robot dogs, and drones to locate it. He filed multiple lawsuits, with the entire process taking more than a decade;
3. At the legal level: UK courts ruled multiple times that the landfill was subject to environmental regulations and that individuals had no right to force an excavation, also ordering James to bear substantial legal costs.
Based on Bitcoin’s current market price, these Bitcoin are worth approximately £569 million, equivalent to more than ¥5.1 billion, and the enormous gap between potential wealth and reality has made this standoff a major focus of the global crypto community.
Latest outcome (2025-2026)
1. In 2025, the UK Court of Appeal completely rejected his excavation application, ruling that he had no prospect of success;
2. The landfill was scheduled to close and be converted into a solar power station during the 2025-2026 fiscal year, permanently closing the window for physical excavation;
3. James ultimately abandoned the physical treasure hunt and instead launched a new project, Ceiniog Coin, attempting to issue a token and tokenize the rights to these unrecoverable Bitcoin, opening up a new direction through narrative-driven storytelling. The private keys to the 8,000 Bitcoin are permanently sleeping in the landfill.
Lessons this brings to the crypto community
1. Private keys are everything: Bitcoin assets depend entirely on private keys. Once the medium storing the private keys is lost, the on-chain assets become completely unusable; the blockchain recognizes keys, not people;
2. Cold wallets and hard-drive backups must have multiple physical backups, and hardware storing private keys must never be discarded carelessly;
3. The physical security of crypto assets is just as important as their technical security. Countless early miners and investors permanently lost their Bitcoin due to damaged or discarded hard drives.
