BounceBit Sunsets Native Blockchain Following $3 Million Security Exploit

Decentralized finance platform BounceBit announced it will decommission its standalone native blockchain after suffering a $3 million protocol exploit. To safeguard remaining user assets, preserve liquidity, and ensure uninterrupted operations, the project team revealed plans to fully migrate its core smart contracts and operational infrastructure to the BNB Chain ecosystem. The incident highlights the growing structural preference among smaller DeFi teams to build on established Layer 1 security models rather than maintaining independent chains.

The BounceBit incident shows that DeFi teams are becoming increasingly clear-headed: the operating and auditing costs of running their own chains are too high, and they cannot contain the damage when vulnerabilities emerge. It is better to move to a mature ecosystem early and leverage its security model. For users, it means more hassle in the short term but less burden in the long term.

Small and medium-sized enterprises really don’t need to maintain their own chain; building applications directly on BNB is much more hassle-free, and users’ assets are safer too.

Spend three million to learn a lesson? It’s not really a loss.

If a security incident happens, just abandon the chain—pretty practical move.
