#Anthropic潜在规模超30万亿美元 Comparable to the entire annual GDP of the United States, Anthropic throws out a $30 trillion TAM “super-narrative”—where is the ceiling of the AI market?
On August 25, The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, may tell investors that its total addressable market (TAM) exceeds $30 trillion. The figure not only resets the boundaries of market expectations for AI companies, but also surpasses SpaceX’s previous $28.5 trillion TAM estimate, becoming one of the largest market-size forecasts in business history.
TAM refers to the total revenue opportunity available for a product or service assuming it captures 100% of the market.
How staggering is $30 trillion? According to FactSet data, the combined revenue of 191 technology companies in the S&P 1500 last year was $2.4 trillion, meaning Anthropic’s claimed potential market is more than 12 times that total.
For comparison, nominal U.S. GDP in 2025 was approximately $30.77 trillion, meaning Anthropic’s TAM is nearly equivalent to the size of the entire U.S. economy. At current exchange rates, $30 trillion is approximately ¥202 trillion.
According to reports, when quantifying its TAM, Anthropic included all the work that AI models could perform. This means the company believes that AI can eventually penetrate nearly every field of knowledge work, from software programming, financial analysis, and medical diagnosis to legal services.
A massive TAM will support Anthropic’s valuation and large-scale infrastructure spending, while serving as the central pillar of the growth narrative behind its planned IPO.
Previously, in IPO filings submitted in May this year, SpaceX called its $28.5 trillion TAM “the largest TAM in human history,” with $26.5 trillion coming from AI opportunities. Anthropic has directly surpassed that record with its $30 trillion figure.
Both companies’ TAM estimates rely heavily on industry data and investment-bank models and inherently contain a considerable degree of speculation.
SpaceX’s TAM covers long-term scenarios such as satellite internet, space transportation, and the colonization of Mars, while Anthropic’s TAM is based on the assumption that AI will reshape nearly every knowledge industry. Both point to a common conclusion: AI will be the largest incremental market over the coming decades.
Looking back over the past decade, TAM figures for major IPOs have expanded dramatically. In its 2019 IPO, Uber claimed a potential market size of $6 trillion, while WeWork also claimed a potential market size of $3 trillion in its ultimately abandoned IPO. Those figures now appear insignificant compared with SpaceX’s $28.5 trillion and Anthropic’s expected TAM of more than $30 trillion.
The speed of TAM expansion reflects a shift in how capital markets price “sector narratives.” Ten years ago, the market was willing to assign valuations of tens of billions of dollars to a $6 trillion market story; today, a $30 trillion story corresponds to a valuation anchor of $2 trillion.
Anthropic’s TAM narrative is not built entirely on thin air. According to media reports, as of the end of July, the company’s annualized revenue run rate (ARR) had surpassed $65 billion, growing more than sevenfold from over $9 billion at the end of 2025. In the second quarter of 2026, the company generated more than $11.5 billion in revenue, approximately 14 times the figure from the same period last year.
But even based on an ARR of $65 billion, Anthropic’s penetration of its $30 trillion TAM is only 0.22%. If it goes public at a $2 trillion valuation, that would imply a price-to-sales ratio of approximately 30.8 times, based on an ARR of $65 billion.
The market is willing to pay a premium equivalent to 30 times annual revenue for a company that currently occupies only 0.2% of its claimed market. This is essentially the advance pricing-in of the belief that “AI will penetrate all knowledge work.”
Anthropic’s $30 trillion TAM narrative faces a credibility test. Because AI may reshape numerous industries, forecasting its long-term impact is inherently extremely difficult, making any long-term TAM estimate highly subjective.
However, for a company seeking a $2 trillion IPO valuation and potentially raising as much as $100 billion, its current ARR of $65 billion is clearly insufficient to support that valuation. What the market needs is a sufficiently grand narrative: AI is not merely a “better search engine” or a “smarter customer service representative,” but infrastructure that will penetrate every aspect of knowledge work.
A $30 trillion TAM is the quantified expression of this narrative.
In Anthropic’s IPO roadshow, TAM will become the central pillar of its growth narrative. It seeks to answer investors’ most fundamental question: How much larger can this company become? The answer is Hollywood-esque: large enough to be nearly equivalent to the size of the entire U.S. economy.
From Uber’s $6 trillion to SpaceX’s $28.5 trillion and then Anthropic’s $30 trillion, the history of TAM expansion is also the history of how capital markets’ pricing logic for a “sector’s ceiling” has evolved. Anthropic’s $30 trillion figure is both an expression of confidence in AI’s long-term value and narrative support for a $2 trillion IPO valuation.
But Wall Street’s rule has never changed: The story can be grand, but pricing must ultimately return to financial execution. When Anthropic lists as early as September or October, the market will answer that ultimate question in its own way: How much is $30 trillion of potential really worth?$ANTHROPIC
