8.25: Bitcoin Breaks Out Strongly—Will Ethereum Catch Up?

Bitcoin began breaking above the recent daily high of 79,600 last night, then broke through 80,000 in the early session, reaching around 81,260 at its peak. Ethereum did not follow. As we repeatedly warned last night, short into rallies and add to shorts. Ethereum retraced and dipped to around 2,450 several times, while Bitcoin’s retracement was relatively small, with only a little over 1,000 points of room. If Bitcoin positions are not closed for profit in time, one may end up facing a grandnephew. In the current market, many people see Bitcoin breaking out and expect Ethereum to catch up, or even claim that the bull market is quickly returning. To be honest, if Bitcoin were moving sideways without rising while Ethereum continued breaking out and rallying, it would indeed warrant a more bullish view. The problem now is that Bitcoin keeps breaking out while Ethereum does not follow, which is consistent with the view we have repeatedly emphasized. Once Bitcoin begins to retrace, Ethereum will likely have even more room to fall, meaning it will not catch up on the upside and may instead catch up on the downside.

Trading recommendations: Enter a Bitcoin short directly at 80,800, with a target around 78,000–79,000; enter an Ethereum short directly at 2,510, with a target around 2,400–2,450.
