Don't rush to hand Marseille the award: Strasbourg have something to offer away from home, and this could turn into a real “heart-pounding game”
In the opening round of the new Ligue 1 season, Marseille host Strasbourg. After looking at the teams' rankings, home advantage, and squad setups, many people's first reaction may be: a Marseille home win.
I also lean toward that outcome, but let me offer one reminder: football's favorite thing is to add a little difficulty to matches that “look simple.”
Marseille finished fifth last season, scoring 63 goals in attack, and have been in good form at home recently. Since new head coach Genesio took over, the team have emphasized a proactive, positive style of play, and clearly hope to establish their rhythm from the very first round of the new season.
But Strasbourg are not here on vacation.
They finished eighth last season, just 6 points behind Marseille, and have remained unbeaten in their last four away matches at the Vélodrome. Their league meeting in February this year even ended 2-2.
This means that although Marseille have home advantage, Strasbourg are not intimidated psychologically.
I expect Marseille to dominate possession and pressing, while Strasbourg look for opportunities to transition quickly. If the home side score first, the match will most likely develop in Marseille's favor; but if it is still 0-0 at halftime, the visitors' confidence will rise significantly.
The data model currently gives Marseille a win probability of around 52.7%, a draw probability of around 22.5%, and Strasbourg a win probability of around 24.8%, with 2-1 one of the most likely scorelines.
Therefore, my final view is very clear:
First choice: Marseille to win.
Score: 2-1.
Cover: 1-1.
This does not look much like a 3-0 script in which “the home side steamrolls all the way,” but more like Marseille taking the initiative first, Strasbourg constantly causing problems, and the hosts ultimately settling the match through their home advantage and attacking quality.
To sum up in one sentence: Marseille want a winning start, while Strasbourg want to spoil the party. Exactly who opens the door first may not be revealed until 90 minutes have passed.#五大联赛赛前预测官
