Anthropic’s reported ambition to stage an initial public offering that matches or surpasses SpaceX’s historic raise has become one of the most closely watched developments in capital markets this year. According to people familiar with the company’s preparations, Anthropic is working toward a public filing that could arrive as soon as the end of August 2026, with the explicit goal of equaling or exceeding the roughly $75 billion SpaceX raised in June, a figure that expanded to approximately $86.2 billion once the overallotment option was exercised. SpaceX’s debut set the all-time record for a first-time share sale and valued the company near $1.77 trillion at pricing. Anthropic, whose last private financing in May valued it at $965 billion after a $65 billion Series H round, now sits at the center of a contest that pits two of the most capital-intensive technology stories of the decade against each other. In my view, this is far more than a simple fundraising exercise; it is a public referendum on whether the current wave of generative AI can sustain valuations and growth rates that previously belonged only to the most speculative corners of private markets.
The comparison carries particular weight because the two companies are commercially intertwined. Anthropic has secured substantial computing capacity from SpaceX under an arrangement reported to run at roughly $1.25 billion per month through 2029, covering access to more than 300,000 Nvidia chips. That relationship means Anthropic would be listing while remaining a major customer of the very company whose IPO record it aims to challenge. From my perspective, this interdependence underscores a broader reality of the AI infrastructure stack: the companies racing to train frontier models are also the largest buyers of the compute that other firms, including SpaceX through its data-center assets, supply. The result is a feedback loop in which capital raised by one entity can flow directly into the growth of another, amplifying both the upside and the systemic concentration risk.
What makes the potential Anthropic offering distinctive is the velocity of its revenue trajectory. Preliminary second-quarter 2026 revenue exceeded $11.5 billion, compared with $787 million in the same period a year earlier. By the end of July the company’s annualized revenue run rate had reached $65 billion. These figures, drawn from company briefings and contemporaneous reporting, place Anthropic ahead of OpenAI on that particular metric at the time of the latest disclosures. At the same time, the cost of achieving that growth has been enormous. Anthropic recorded a net loss of nearly $42 billion in 2025, roughly five times the prior year’s figure, driven overwhelmingly by computing and training expenses. Adjusted operating income turned positive in the second quarter of 2026, yet the absolute scale of cash burn remains unprecedented for a company still private. In my analysis, public investors will be asked to underwrite a business that is simultaneously generating tens of billions in annualized revenue and consuming capital at a comparable pace. That combination is rare even by the standards of high-growth technology listings.
The strategic importance of the listing extends well beyond Anthropic’s own balance sheet. A successful debut at or above the SpaceX record would cement 2026 as the largest year for U.S. IPO volume on record, potentially pushing the annual total past the previous peak set in 2021. As of mid-August, newly listed companies had already raised more than $160 billion, leaving the market within striking distance of that earlier high. More fundamentally, the offering would transfer a substantial portion of the AI frontier from private to public ownership, giving ordinary investors, pension funds, and index vehicles direct exposure to one of the two leading independent model developers. OpenAI has deferred its own public timeline into 2027, creating a temporary window in which Anthropic can establish itself as the first pure-play frontier AI company to trade on a major exchange. I believe that sequencing matters. The first mover in this category will set the valuation benchmarks, disclosure norms, and investor expectations against which every subsequent AI listing will be measured.
For users of Anthropic’s Claude models the practical implications are more immediate. Public markets impose continuous reporting discipline and create a permanent capital base that can support multi-year infrastructure commitments. In my view, that stability could translate into more consistent model iteration cycles, broader enterprise feature development, and reduced risk of sudden capacity constraints. Enterprise customers already relying on Claude for coding, research, and automation would gain greater visibility into the financial health of their supplier. At the same time, the move to public markets typically introduces pressure for near-term profitability that can conflict with the long research horizons required for frontier model development. The tension between those two demands will shape product roadmaps for years after any listing.
Competition and liquidity dynamics further elevate the stakes. Anthropic’s private-market valuation already exceeded OpenAI’s at the time of the May financing, and its revenue run rate has pulled ahead on the most recent data. A public listing would give Anthropic a liquid currency for acquisitions, talent retention through equity compensation, and potential partnerships that private capital alone cannot easily match. Liquidity also works in the opposite direction: early investors and employees would finally obtain a transparent exit path after years of illiquid holdings. Yet the same liquidity can amplify volatility. SpaceX shares themselves experienced significant swings after their June debut, at times trading below the IPO price amid broader market rotations and execution questions. An Anthropic listing of comparable size would face similar scrutiny, particularly around the sustainability of its revenue growth, the concentration of compute spending, and the competitive responses from well-capitalized hyperscalers.
Risks and limitations are substantial and should not be minimized. The company’s own projections reportedly underpin discussions of a valuation approaching or exceeding $2 trillion, with some internal forecasts pointing toward $190 billion to $200 billion of revenue by 2028. Those numbers remain forward-looking and unproven. Public investors will demand evidence that current growth rates can persist once the most enthusiastic early adopters have been penetrated and once competing models from OpenAI, Google, Meta, and others intensify price and capability pressure. Compute costs remain the dominant variable; any disruption in the SpaceX arrangement or a sharp rise in Nvidia pricing would immediately pressure margins. Governance choices, including the reported consideration of super-voting shares for founders, may also draw scrutiny from institutional holders who prefer more conventional voting structures. Finally, the sheer size of the contemplated raise introduces execution risk: absorbing tens of billions of new capital into the public float without triggering a prolonged period of price discovery is a challenge few underwriters have faced at this scale.
Looking ahead, the outcome of Anthropic’s process will influence capital allocation across the entire technology sector. A strong debut would reinforce the narrative that AI infrastructure and model development can support valuations previously reserved for the largest platform companies. A more muted reception would force a recalibration of private-market pricing and could slow the pipeline of subsequent AI listings. In either case, the episode illustrates how thoroughly the boundary between private and public markets has blurred for the most capital-intensive technology firms. SpaceX demonstrated that investors are willing to underwrite ambitious, multi-decade infrastructure stories at unprecedented scale. Anthropic is now testing whether the same appetite extends to pure software and model companies whose primary assets are trained weights, data partnerships, and research talent.
From my perspective, the deeper significance lies less in which company ultimately claims the largest raise and more in the normalization of trillion-dollar AI valuations as a public-market phenomenon. The capital intensity required to remain competitive at the frontier has already concentrated power among a small number of players. Public listings accelerate that concentration by giving the leaders permanent access to deeper pools of capital while simultaneously subjecting them to the discipline of quarterly scrutiny. Whether that combination produces more durable innovation or simply amplifies boom-and-bust cycles remains an open question. What is already clear is that Anthropic’s preparations mark the moment when the AI industry’s private exuberance collides with the more permanent, and more exacting, judgment of public capital. The size of the contemplated offering, the speed of the revenue ramp, and the interdependence with SpaceX itself make this one of the most consequential capital-markets events of the decade. How investors ultimately price the risk and the growth will shape the financing environment for every ambitious technology company that follows.
