$71k Trampled Under BTC’s Feet: A Real Breakout or a “Bull Trap Gift Package”?

Bitcoin suddenly exploded, with bulls possibly the happiest and exchange risk-control systems probably the busiest.
On August 20, BTC decisively broke above $70k and then continued advancing toward the $71k–$72k range, posting an astonishing short-term gain. Data shows that BTC has risen approximately 14% over the past four days, making this one of the strongest short-term rallies since 2024 began.
What stands out about this move is how quickly it reversed the market’s previously bearish sentiment.
BTC had struggled around $60k for an extended period, while the market had plenty of concerns about institutional demand, the macro environment, and regulatory policy. Some even believed that if BTC failed to reclaim key moving averages, the market could remain range-bound.
In the end, the market chose the simplest solution: it just rose and showed you.
In terms of catalysts, the improving US policy environment is clearly an important variable. Recent exchanges between the White House and crypto industry figures, along with Trump’s push for the CLARITY Act, have strengthened expectations that the US crypto regulatory framework will become more clearly defined.
In addition, news that the US Treasury would increase long-term Treasury buybacks has fueled expectations of improved liquidity. The market has repeatedly shown that once funding conditions become favorable, BTC is often the risk asset that is quickest to “get moving.”
So here’s the question: Can you still chase the rally?
My answer is: You can be bullish, but don’t get carried away.
$70k is currently the most important psychological level. If BTC can pull back toward $70k and quickly reclaim it, that would indicate that the breakout has some validity; if it remains firmly above $71k–$72k, the market may continue testing higher resistance in the next phase.
But if it quickly falls back below $70k after surging, beware of the classic combination of a “false breakout + bulls providing exit liquidity.”
My trading approach is simple: think long when the trend is upward, and control position size when the price is too high.
At this stage, the biggest fear is not that BTC will fail to rise, but that it will rise too quickly and create the illusion that “if you don’t get on now, you’ll never have another chance.”
Remember: The bull market’s biggest trick is often not telling you that prices won’t rise, but making you believe they will definitely rise again tomorrow.
