Rayo Vallecano vs Deportivo Alaves | LaLiga Gameweek 2 - Deep Dive Prediction: Rayo 2-1 Alaves
The top five leagues are kicking off and LaLiga gives us a perfect opener for the prediction challenge. Rayo Vallecano hosting Alaves at Vallecas on August 20th is more than just a mid-table clash – it’s a tactical battle of two teams who know each other too well.
Here is my full breakdown:
1. CONTEXT & RECENT FORM
Rayo Vallecano finished last season in the top 10 and proved they are the kings of chaos at home. Their last official game was a 1-2 away win against Alaves on 23 May 2026. Overall H2H: Rayo 7 wins, Alaves 4 wins, 0 draws in the last 11. In the last 5 H2H games, Rayo is unbeaten – 3 wins, 2 draws, averaging 1.8 goals scored and only 0.8 conceded.
Alaves comes into this game with a weird pre-season. They went on a 4-game winning streak against Getafe, Racing, Castellon and Girona, but those were mostly second-string opponents. Rayo, on the other hand, lost 2 pre-season friendlies against Sevilla and Ipswich Town – but Inigo Perez was testing a new 4-2-3-1 with heavy rotation. I don’t read too much into pre-season losses.
Crucially, Vallecas is not Mendizorroza. It’s a 14,500 capacity pressure cooker where away teams average 1.3 xGA more than at home.
2. PREDICTED LINE-UPS & SQUAD POTENTIAL
Rayo Vallecano (4-4-2 / 4-2-3-1 hybrid) - Coach: Iñigo Pérez
Potential XI: Batalla (GK); Ratiu, Lejeune, Mumin, Chavarria; De Frutos, Unai Lopez, Oscar Valentin (C), Alvaro Garcia; Isi Palazon, Sergio Camello.
This is a team built on work-rate and transitions. The potential is all in the wide areas. Alvaro Garcia on the left is still one of the most underrated 1v1 wingers in LaLiga – 11 goals + 7 assists last year. On the right, Jorge De Frutos provides direct speed. In the middle, Isi Palazon is the brain. He is not just a number 10; he is the player with the highest shot-creating actions per 90 for Rayo. Oscar Valentin and Unai Lopez double pivot gives both defensive cover and line-breaking passes.
Bench weapons: Raul de Tomas as a super-sub, Pathé Ciss for physicality if they need to close the game, and new signing from Rayo B, Diego Mendez, who has massive potential as a left-footed winger.
Rayo’s ceiling this season? If they keep this press intensity, they can fight for Conference League again. Their potential xG at home is 1.65 per game.
Deportivo Alaves (4-2-3-1) - Coach: Luis Garcia Plaza
Potential XI: Sivera (GK); Tenaglia, Abqar, Diarra, Moussa Diarra; Antonio Blanco, Jon Guridi; Carlos Vicente, Stoichkov, Conechny; Toni Martinez.
Here is where the game breaks down. Alaves is missing two absolute starters: Facundo Garcés is suspended after that red card on MD1, and Lucas Boyé – their main aerial target and press trigger – is out with a hamstring injury.
Without Boyé, their potential upfront drops 40%. Toni Martinez is a good finisher but he doesn't link play. Their main threat will be Carlos Vicente on the right wing – 9 goals last season, all from transition. Antonio Blanco and Guridi will try to slow the game down and play direct.
Bench: Carlos Benavidez, Kike Garcia (37 but still dangerous in the air), and youngster Victor Parada who has huge potential but is still raw.
Alaves’ potential this season is survival plus cup run. Away from home, they average only 0.9 goals scored.
3. KEY BATTLES
• Ratiu vs Conechny: Ratiu is ultra-offensive. If he pushes too high, Alaves will target that space. • Isi Palazon vs Antonio Blanco: Blanco is the only player who can press Isi man-to-man. If Isi finds pockets between lines, Rayo will create 5-6 big chances. • Set Pieces: Rayo scored 38% of their goals from set pieces last year. Without Garcés, Alaves is vulnerable. Lejeune vs Abqar will be decisive.
4. MY PREDICTION & BETTING ANGLE
I see Rayo dominating possession 58-62%, with 15-17 shots, 5 on target. Alaves will have 8-10 shots, mostly from counters.
The most logical scoreline: Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Deportivo Alaves
• Goal Timeline: Rayo goal 20'-35' (De Frutos or Isi), Alaves equalizer 55'-65' (Carlos Vicente counter), Winning goal 76'-88' (Alvaro Garcia or Sergio Camello from a cross). • Alternative safe score: 2-0 Rayo if they score early and Alaves has to open up. • Both Teams to Score: YES (70% probability) • Over 2.5 Goals: YES (62% probability)
Why not a draw? Because Alaves without Boyé cannot sustain pressure for 90 minutes in Vallecas. Their bench lacks the firepower to change the game late. Rayo’s substitutes are much more impactful.
This is my high-confidence pick for today.
