Optimism’s $49M OP Token Decision Raises Questions

Optimism governance has approved a proposal to redirect 546.9 million OP that had been reserved for future user airdrops into a Strategic Ecosystem Fund.
The tokens were worth roughly $49M at the reported market price.
The proposal passed after a closely watched vote, with a large vote from Optimism-funded core development team Test in Prod helping push it over the approval threshold.
The key point: these OP tokens were not already distributed to users. They were allocated for future airdrops and will now be managed through the Foundation’s ecosystem-focused fund.
The move could give Optimism more flexibility to support strategic projects and ecosystem growth, but it also raises an important question:
Should tokens reserved for future users be redirected toward ecosystem development?
Governance decisions like this show why token allocation and voting power matter just as much as the technology behind a blockchain.

The core development team is using the money they funded themselves to vote for their own project—how is this decentralized governance? It’s clearly just moving money from one hand to the other. Have users gotten so used to being gaslit?

They say it’s for users, but the wallet tells the truth. Will the next airdrop turn into PPT fundraising again?
