Málaga to pull off a major upset? In theory, yes—but in reality, they may first need to apply for an “extra-time stamina pack”
Atlético Madrid vs. Málaga—the biggest suspense in the first-round prediction is not really who is stronger, but whether Málaga can turn the “gap in strength” into a “competitive match.”
On paper, Atlético are clearly superior. The team strengthened its squad this summer with players such as Grimaldo, Romero, Højbjerg, and Lee Kang-in, while Simeone also hopes to use the new squad structure to make the team more stable in the new season. Meanwhile, Málaga have returned to La Liga after many years and immediately face Atlético in the opening round—the difficulty is basically like having the final exam question appear first.
However, there is one particularly annoying thing about football matches—they do not hand out medals based on wage bills.
If Málaga want to pull off an upset, the most realistic approach is not to compete with Atlético for possession, nor to push forward and show their strength, but to keep their defensive shape compact, reduce the space around the edge of Atlético’s penalty area, and wait for counterattacking opportunities. In particular, if they can maintain a 0-0 scoreline into the second half, Atlético’s patience and pressure will both be tested.
Atlético’s problems do indeed exist, too. Álvarez is absent, while Sørloth has been affected by injury, meaning the team will need to adjust its center-forward position. Pre-match reports have already clearly noted that there are uncertainties in Atlético’s attack in terms of personnel and coordination.
So I believe this match may not begin with the “Red-and-Whites” launching a furious barrage. Málaga will most likely set up a defensive wall first and try to drag the game into a rhythm that suits them.
But here is the problem: no matter how solid the defensive wall is, it still has to withstand Atlético knocking on the door again and again.
My prediction remains an Atlético home win, leaning toward 2-0, with 2-1 as the second choice. Málaga have a chance to make Atlético anxious, but to truly take points, they may need to max out the goal frame, goalkeeper, and luck all at once. After all, an upset is not impossible—it is just that this cold front seems to be still some distance from Madrid.#五大联赛赛前预测官
