KOSPI Tumbles Over 6 Percent Triggers Trading Halt

• KOSPI tumbles over 6 percent triggers trading halt • Kospi plunged 6 percent on escalating geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices and selloff in AI linked semiconductor stocks
• South Korea Kospi, world best performing stock market this year, plunged 8 percent or 589 points to 6,886 on Monday, triggering trading halt, as escalating conflict in Gulf and Iran claim that it had closed strategically important Strait of Hormuz sent oil prices sharply higher and reignited global inflation fears
• Benchmark KOSPI fell 8.03 percent or over 600 points to 7,404.48. Sharp selloff triggered circuit breakers, halting trading for 20 minutes
• Trading halted for 20 minutes as heavy foreign, institutional selling hit benchmark index
• South Korean stocks triggered marketwide circuit breaker on Friday after Kospi plunged more than 8 percent in intraday trading, capping volatile week marked by sharp swings in chip heavy shares
• Trading was halted on KOSPI Thursday as slump triggered sell side regulatory halt, or circuit breaker, very early in morning session for 15 minutes. Index closed trading down 7.89 percent for day
• Benchmark KOSPI index plunged over 12 percent, triggering market wide trading halt for second consecutive session
Why Trading Halt Triggered
1. Circuit Breaker Rule Korea Exchange triggers measure after Kospi plummeted more than 8 percent from previous session close. Trading of KOSPI listed shares halted for 20 minutes. At 12:32 p.m. circuit breaker triggered marking first time measure activated for two consecutive sessions on benchmark market
2. Chip Heavy Concentration Seoul market is hostage to benchmark two largest constituents memory chip titans SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics which together represent roughly half of Kospi total market capitalization. Shares of index heavyweight Samsung Electronics slumped as much as 13 percent, on track for sharpest daily fall since plunging 14 percent on Oct 24 in 2008. Samsung and SK Hynix account for more than half of Kospi index
3. AI Trade Unwind South Korean stocks plunged Monday with KOSPI Index tumbling more than 8 percent and triggering 20 minute trading halt shortly after open, as investors unwound crowded artificial intelligence bets that had powered world biggest equity rally. Kospi plunges 8 percent as AI investors fear rally is overblown
4. Geopolitical And Oil Shock Escalating geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices and Gulf conflict plus Iran claim closed Strait of Hormuz sent oil sharply higher and reignited global inflation fears. That plus selloff in AI linked semiconductor stocks drove 6 percent plunge
5. Double Halt Cascade Market operator triggered two trading halts on Kospi to curb volatility and similar brief halts on smaller technology heavy Kosdaq index. Trading on secondary Kosdaq market also halted after index fell more than 8 percent marking first time circuit breakers triggered on both markets for two consecutive sessions. Sidecar activated when benchmark futures index fluctuates for at least one minute by 5 percent for KOSPI and 6 percent for KOSDAQ which also requires 3 percent spot index move leading to temporary halt of program trading for five minutes
Context Of Rollercoaster
• Day to day double digit gyrations in value of Kospi. On July 31 Kospi logged largest one day gain of 18 percent. Two days earlier it had fallen by 12.6 percent triggering intraday trading halt of 20 minutes
• Latest decline came after 11 percent slide in previous session taking benchmark losses to more than 21 percent in two days. KOSPI slipped below 6,000 mark for first time since early April and is on track for worst monthly performance on record having fallen around 35 percent this month
• Foreign investors continued to sell after withdrawing more than 10 billion worth of KOSPI shares on net basis last week while retail investors offloading nearly 2 trillion won
