The German Energy Agency has agreed with a new altcoin project to pioneer decentralized identities. The partnership unlocks the potentials of 'decentralized identities' in the energy sector.

The German Energy Agency (dena) has announced that Blockchain protocol KILT Protocol (KILT) will provide the basic infrastructure for decentralized digital identities in the DIVE project. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Action, this ambitious initiative aims to evaluate the potential benefits of decentralized identities in the energy sector through real-world use cases.
The energy sector is currently focused on expanding renewable energy sources. This vision is undergoing a crucial transformation to achieve climate neutrality. In the official announcement, KILT Protocol (KILT) gave details about what the partnership will bring to the energy sector.

Rather than relying on large centralized power plants, the energy landscape of the future will have multiple decentralized systems, including wind turbines, solar parks, and small-scale solar installations on roofs and balconies. In addition, there is a growing need to integrate charging stations for electric vehicles, heat pumps and home energy storage.
Why was a Blockchain protocol chosen?
One of the main challenges in this decentralized energy paradigm is automating the exchange between different applications for small power generation facilities. These facilities usually consume electricity themselves or feed it into the grid. Automating the process is crucial to maintaining grid stability, efficiency and resilience. However, providing confidence and certainty that a facility can supply a certain amount of electricity at any given time requires a secure and reliable digital identity solution.
This is where the DIVE project comes into play. The project focuses on equipping systems and devices in the energy system with secure digital IDs. It also aims to discover the necessary constructs for associated identity management. In essence, a digital ID acts like an analog ID, just like an ID card. These digital identities are verified and managed by the authorities. They are also designed to provide verification of system availability, features, and usability.
The DIVE project is a continuation of the “Blockchain Machine Identity Ledger (BMIL)” project. In this project he proved the technical feasibility of connecting decentralized facilities to a decentralized identity register.
The future of the DIVE project
In the future, the DIVE project will test scenarios for various applications, including rapid switching of suppliers in e-charging stations. The project covers these use cases extensively. In this way, it aims to provide a transformation path that summarizes all the necessary steps for a wider application. This pathway helps to create an ecosystem. Thus, it will drive Germany's energy transition forward by facilitating the rollout of more applications.
