Coinbase is looking to expand its presence in Canada, but the company believes long-term growth depends on one key factor: clear and permanent crypto regulations.

According to Coinbase Canada's CEO, Eric Richmond, the company aims to evolve into an "everything exchange" by offering a wider range of digital asset services. Future plans include expanding into crypto derivatives, tokenized assets, and decentralized finance (DeFi).

However, Richmond emphasized that temporary regulatory exemptions are not enough to support innovation at scale. Instead, businesses need consistent rules that provide certainty for both companies and users.

This reflects a broader trend across the crypto industry. As digital assets become more integrated with traditional finance, regulatory clarity is increasingly seen as essential for attracting investment, launching new products, and protecting consumers.

For Coinbase, Canada represents an important market where responsible innovation and clear regulations could work together to accelerate crypto adoption.

As governments continue refining their digital asset policies, the balance between innovation and regulation is likely to shape the next phase of the global crypto industry.

Coinbase wants to build an all-finance platform, but the regulatory framework needs to be put in place first, otherwise the risks are too high.

Temporary exemptions are indeed unreliable; companies need certainty to dare to invest.

The key is still to balance innovation and regulation, so that chaos like in the United States doesn’t happen again.
