SK Hynix Just Posted Record Profit — And The Stock Still Dropped 8%. Here's Why That Matters. 🧵

This is one of those headlines that trips people up if you only read the numbers on the surface. SK Hynix reported Q2 revenue of 79.32T KRW and operating profit of 60.54T KRW — up 557% year-over-year 📈. Objectively incredible growth. Yet ADRs fell over 8% after hours 📉.

So what happened? The market isn't just pricing in results — it's pricing in *expectations versus results 🧠. Hynix missed estimates because of how their HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) contracts are structured. Many are long-term, fixed-price agreements signed before the recent surge in legacy DRAM and NAND prices 💾. That means Hynix locked in HBM pricing early and missed some of the upside happening elsewhere in the memory market right now.

The lesson for traders: a "beat" or "miss" isn't just about the number — it's about whether it matches what smart money already priced in ⚖️. Strong fundamentals can still trigger a selloff if positioning was ahead of reality.

Worth watching 👀: HBM4 is already in mass production, expanding further in H2 🚀. If legacy pricing trends hold, future quarters could look very different.

Semiconductor earnings season is a great case study in narrative
