Apple faces a $1.8 million lawsuit over fake Bitcoin apps

Jiebi.com reported that Apple is facing a federal lawsuit from three users who claim that a fake Sparrow wallet app distributed via the Apple App Store led to about $1.84 million in Bitcoin losses. The plaintiffs, James Ramirez, Christopher Ellis, and Jalen Delgado, filed a 54-page complaint on July 24 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuit has not yet been heard in court, and Apple has not publicly responded to the case. The complaint states that Delgado downloaded a counterfeit app on May 1, 2025, resulting in a loss of about $120k; Ramirez downloaded another app on July 25, losing 7.4 BTC, worth about $875k; and Ellis lost about $840k after using the app on August 3. Each user says the software requested wallet mnemonic phrases before transferring Bitcoin to addresses controlled by the attacker. Apple said it took swift action, deleting the app impersonating the Sparrow wallet and terminating the associated developer account.
