South Korea's stock market experienced one of its sharpest declines in recent history on July 28, 2026, as the benchmark KOSPI index plunged more than 8%, triggering a 20-minute circuit breaker for the third time this month. The selloff pushed the index below the 6,700-point level, extending its decline to more than 25% from the all-time closing high of 9,114.55 recorded in late June and officially placing the market in bear territory.

WHAT TRIGGERED THE CRASH?
The collapse was driven primarily by heavy losses in the semiconductor industry, which had powered South Korea's remarkable market rally throughout 2025 and the first half of 2026. As investors rapidly reduced exposure to chipmakers, confidence across the broader Korean equity market weakened dramatically.
THE BIGGEST LOSERS
Samsung Electronics, the country's largest listed company and one of the most influential components of the KOSPI, dropped approximately 9%, falling below the 230,000 won level.
SK Hynix, the global leader in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used for AI infrastructure, declined by more than 10%, with its share price falling into the low 1.6 million won range.
Because these two companies account for more than half of the KOSPI's weighting, their sharp declines largely dictated the direction of the entire index.
GLOBAL PRESSURE BUILDS
The weakness followed losses on Wall Street after the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 2.2%. Investors have become increasingly cautious about whether massive AI infrastructure spending by companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google can continue delivering strong returns, or whether the investment cycle is beginning to slow after years of rapid expansion.
CHINA ADDS COMPETITIVE PRESSURE
Investor concerns intensified following the successful IPO debut of Chinese memory manufacturer CXMT. The company's strong market performance renewed worries that China's semiconductor industry is rapidly narrowing the competitive gap. Additional reports suggesting Apple had been lobbying the Trump administration to permit the use of certain Chinese-made chips added further uncertainty regarding the long-term competitive position of Korean memory producers.
MACRO RISKS RETURN
Beyond technology concerns, rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran pushed oil prices higher, reviving inflation worries ahead of the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting. Expectations that higher inflation could delay monetary easing encouraged investors to reduce exposure to risk assets across global markets.
REGIONAL SELLING SPREADS
Foreign and institutional investors sold a combined 3.9 trillion won of Korean equities during the session. The pressure quickly spread throughout Asia, with Japan's Nikkei Index falling around 4%, Tokyo Electron declining more than 9%, and Advantest dropping over 8%, highlighting how closely regional semiconductor markets remain connected.
WHY INVESTORS ARE STILL WATCHING
Despite the severe correction, the KOSPI remains one of the world's strongest-performing major equity indices on a year-over-year basis, still more than doubling compared with levels seen a year earlier. Analysts believe the recent volatility reflects the risks of a market heavily concentrated in AI-related semiconductor companies, where rapid gains can quickly reverse when investor sentiment changes.
The KOSPI circuit breaker demonstrates how quickly macroeconomic uncertainty, geopolitical developments, and shifts in AI expectations can reshape financial markets. For crypto investors, the event reinforces the importance of monitoring traditional equity markets, as technology stocks and digital assets often experience synchronized risk-off movements during periods of heightened uncertainty.
