Turkish Ardahan governor Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli usually rides his bicycle, but was criticized by a member of parliament for riding publicly in professional cycling gear, saying it was “inappropriate for an official’s dignity.” On July 17, he was removed by presidential decree. Since the order did not state a handover rationale, it’s not something that can be directly said he lost his post because of tight-fitting cycling shorts—but this timing makes it hard not to speculate.
Even more absurdly, more than ten thousand people in the area signed a petition urging him to return, saying he has done well in promoting sports, youth events, and cycling tourism. He himself seemed unfazed, saying he was wearing normal sportswear and that he would continue to pedal next.
